As we mark Domestic Abuse Awareness Month and Black History Month, we recognise the strength, resilience and voices of Black women and survivors whose experiences have too often been overlooked. To do this, we are sharing the incredibly insightful piece of research by @sistahspace called Hidden in Plain Sight. Their research shares the experiences of domestic abuse support among African & Caribbean heritage Black Women. Over 2,200 voices were heard across England & Wales. We have shared just some of the headlines, we highly recommend reading their full research to hear the voices behind the data. Read it: www.sistahspace.org/research #domesticabuseawarenessmonth #blackhistorymonth #domesticabuse The overwhelming majority experienced repeated abuse - across different relationships or extended periods. This pattern points to systemic failures in intervention, not isolated incidents. Women reported the top reasons for feeling unable to report was: ✨ Fear of retaliation (49.9%) ✨ Fear of stereotypes as a Black woman (47.8%) ✨ Fear of not being believed (43.2%) ✨ A further 21.9% didn’t how or where to report “They make it hard for you to get justice” 87% found that statuatory agencies unresponsive. Interviews revealed officers laughing with perpetrators, evidence procedures unsuitable for Black skin, and social workers displaying racial bias. “It took 3 years after making an emergency application. Every single statutory service failed me.” 48% said cultural norms directly influence reporting, including: ✨ The impossible choice between safety and racial solidarity ✨ The culture of silence ✨ Normalisation of abuse as tradition ✨ The weaponisation of Black women’s strength ✨ The certainty of institutional betrayal If you need support, specialist services are available for you 🧡

With Laura Devine and Rose Lewis of Sistah Space, the charity who benefited from my talk at the LDI literary Lounge on Tuesday. I can't give the exact figure but a substantial donation was raised for sister space. If you've read The Mercy Step you'll know why I chose that particular charity. They provide specialist, culturally competent support and advocacy services for women and girls of African and Caribbean heritage affected by domestic and sexual abuse. There was nothing like that around when I was little, I'm so glad they exist now. #TheMercyStep #WomensPrizeForFiction #DebutNovel

October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month. This is my story. 🖤 I am not sharing my story because I want sympathy. I am sharing it because I know there are women living through what I once experienced, wondering how they will ever find their way out. I know what it feels like to lose yourself while trying to keep a family together. To carry pain behind a smile. To be strong for your children while privately trying to find the strength to keep going yourself. Domestic abuse doesn’t just leave physical scars. It can affect your confidence, your identity, your mental wellbeing and your ability to trust yourself again. And leaving is not always the end of the struggle. Sometimes, it is the beginning of rebuilding a life you barely recognise. For me, overcoming meant finding my voice again. Rebuilding my confidence. Returning to education. Learning boundaries. Reconnecting with my body and prioritising my healing. And understanding that I could be a mother, a survivor and a woman with dreams of her own. I had to learn that choosing myself was not selfish. That protecting my peace was not cruel. And that I did not have to sacrifice myself to prove that I was a good woman or a good mother. I am more than what I survived. My past is part of my story, but it does not get to dictate the rest of it. I share this for the woman who feels trapped. For the woman who has been made to doubt her own reality. For the woman who is quietly planning her next chapter. And for the woman who has already left but is still healing. You are not weak for what you endured. You are not a failure because a relationship broke down. And you do not have to have everything figured out to begin again. Healing is not always pretty. Rebuilding is not always linear. But your life is still yours to reclaim. From survival to restoration. From silence to finding my voice. From losing myself to rediscovering who I am. This is my story. And I am still becoming.
