Studio visit earlier this summer (07/25) with Kemi @kemischle and Christian @sistertomato former PC Fellows! Kemi was a part of our 2024 cohort and Christian was a fellow in 2021! Since their respective fellowships, they’ve started careers as full time ceramic artists and educators while using their shared studio to produce beautiful bodies of work. Their shared studio is filled with Kemi’s large carved vessels that come from memories of home throughout her life, and Christian’s expressive sculptures focused on his experiences as a native New Yorker. They share this studio space with three other ceramic artists and one furry friend, where everyone runs the kilns and maintains the space. Christian and Kemi use their shared studio as a base while teaching ceramics across the city, and both are currently teaching at Gasworks.

During this visit current fellows were able to ask Christian and Kemi about their artistic practices and what it’s like working full time as Black Ceramicists in the city. As former fellows, Kemi and Christian were able to share their career experiences after finishing their summer with Public Ceramics and how they go about their studio practice! ✰

Special thanks to our wonderful Public Ceramics Community and partner studios @gasworksnyc , @clayspace_bk , and @uptownclay !

The best teachers are the ones who make you feel like there are no wrong ideas.

That’s @sistertomato ♡( •ॢ◡-ॢ)✧˖° ♡

This will be his second time teaching at Ridgewood Ceramics, and we couldn’t be happier to have him back!

I’ve known Christian for a bit now, and beyond being an incredibly talented artist, he’s one of the kindest, most genuine people you’ll meet. The way he approaches clay is playful, curious, and completely his own and that’s exactly how he teaches.

If you’ve been wanting to loosen up, experiment more, and build confidence on the wheel, this is your sign!

✦ Thursday 8- week Wheel Throwing - starts Thursday 7/31
✦ Wednesday 8-Week Wheel Course - starts July 15

A few spots are still available. Come learn from one of my favorite ceramist!!

ICYMI last night, our 3rd annual YOWIE group object show featuring salt & pepper shakers will be on view through Wednesday, May 13th. Swipe to see the best times to catch the show. Thank you to the city for showing UP last night and making our opening a smashing success. Many of the works are for sale so please reach out if you are interested in a piece. Today in the shop, we will also be showcasing a small selection of vintage curated shakers sourced by the YOWIE team for purchase. If you have any good photos or videos from last night please share them for our recap! A million thanks to the 100+ artists who created work for the show and their many friends and family who came to celebrate them. And to Bre Furlong @brefurlong for helping us document the work for the artists and Sato Harris @satoharris for capturing the event in real time!
