Tuna is a Eurorack module that enables you to navigate a collection of sound like a 3D landscape. Each collection contains up to 256 short samples, arranged in space using an AI embedding model so that sonically related sounds occupy neighbouring positions. Control voltages move the playhead through the sounscape, whilst a granular engine morphs between neighbouring samples. Each sound collection becomes its own sonic world. Currently each collection is loaded from an SD card, and is curated from an open dataset of human-labeled sound events (FSD50K). Users will also be able to import their own samples. We will be making a small batch, and taking orders this autumn. #modularsynth #eurorack #eyefi #tuna

It has been a fun and exciting journey with the amazing @goldsmithsmadesign students, exploring how designers can imagine and create ways to communicate Synthetic Empathy for nonhumans. Students researched how we might express social emotions that generate empathy - apology, guilt, and shame - towards diverse nonhuman agents, including AI, chairs, yeast, moss, plastic, ants, and fungi. The project challenged them to take a non-human-centric approach, opening valuable discussions on how we usually understand and judge nonhuman domains, and how our emotional reflections shift when we attempt to express ‘empathy’ towards them. Conversations explored attachment, worship, admiration, care, sympathy, and compassion. Come see their work at today’s small showcase at the Lesoco campus in Deptford from 4pm onwards if you’re around. Amazing collaboration in leading and teaching with @bethany.rigby @annezzzzzz @agihaines @sitraka___ and thanks @niritbin for special guest lecture! #Syntheticempathyfornonhumans #goldsmithsdesign #tranfocality

I am excited about our new @goldsmithsmadesign brief, “Synthetic Empathy for Nonhumans,” for the Transfocality module, which successfully launched yesterday with @bethany.rigby and @annezzzzzz. This brief is based on the research project I have been developing with @agihaines since last year under the same title. Through the brief (and the project), we aim to explore how humans relate to nonhumans (e.g., other species, ecological systems, robots, or AI agents) in the era of planetary crises and rapidly advancing artificial intelligence, and what designers could rethink. The students are challenged to explore “Synthetic Empathy”, which involves designing and mediating emotional connections that bridge the boundaries between humans and nonhumans. The brief asks to start the project by investigating human social emotions, guilt and apology. These emotions are often complexly entangled with others such as pride, shame, empathy, embarrassment, and forgiveness. This creates interdependent emotional dynamics that influence how we negotiate accountability, care, and repair in our everyday lives. Then, the critical questions should be addressed: How, and why a design or technology would provoke, stimulate, or support these emotions? What ethical, cultural, and political tensions would arise when emotional labour is mediated by design or technology? Really looking forward to seeing exciting ideas from the @goldsmithsmadesign students over the next 10 weeks! We will also have fantastic guest lecturers, including @agihaines , @sitraka___ , and @niritbin! 🤩 #goldsmithsmadesign #sytheticempathyfornonhumans

➰➰➰➰➰➰➰➰➰➰➰➰➰➰ With the School of Maybe, the new department of design under the leadership of Johanna Pichlbauer is launching its very first event: from July 9-13, tFORUM STADTPARK will be transformed into a school of stories and offer space and inspiration for experimental, artistic research. The aim is to train the imagination that everything could be completely different. This year's guest is Ralo Mayer, who is exploring the diverse relationships between outer space and our own planet. Based on his multidisciplinary work, the artist will contribute narrative strands ranging from the mining of raw materials on asteroids to artificial ecosystems. Although the School of Maybe is conceived as a closed format, there will be three program points open to the public - more information can be found directly on the slides. ____________ Credits:  E.T. ©️Ebay Artificial Horizon  ©️Marlene Mautner Die Grazer SLR-Station im nächtlichen Beobachtungsbetrieb, Observatorium Lustbühel ©️ Dr. Christian Kettenbach  Pallasit, Krasnojarsk  ©️ Joanneum Re-Imagining Outer Space  ©️ Joseph Popper, Sitraka Rakotoniaina

Very Very Far Away ( \’ \’ ≠ .\ ) is a design & research studio based in Bow, East London. Founded by Sitraka Rakotoniaina and Andrew Friend, it specialises in building and prototyping object based interactions between users and systems, humans and machines, machines and non-humans. The nature of this ever-changing, ever-evolving, identity-shifting studio, gave us the inspiration to generate a string of typed glyphs as an iconic symbol, reminding one of a string of code. Their identity constantly changes and adapts to the situation and collaborators, using and reinterpreting fonts to their own benefit, and transforming any visual language into their very own “Logo” simply by typing: (backslash, apostrophe, backslash, apostrophe, not equal, full stop, backslash) \’ \’ ≠ .\
