#ArtistSpotlight: In this post we are highlighting the remarkable young violinist, Yesong Sophie Lee!

"Korean-American violinist Yesong Sophie Lee, born in Seattle, Washington, has been captivating audiences worldwide with her expressive depth, elegant sound, and commanding stage presence. Since winning First Prize at the 2016 Menuhin International Junior Violin Competition in London at the age of twelve, she has been recognized as “quickly building an international following as an emerging young virtuoso of outstanding potential” (The Violin Channel). Her performances have been praised as “silk-toned, notable especially for the intensity it maintained even at the furthest tip of the bow,” and for their “seriousness and density of expression… a huge talent” (CM Classics).

Since her remarkable debut, Lee has gone on to earn international acclaim as one of the most promising violinists of her generation. She was the youngest prizewinner at the 2022 International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition, received the Prize for Best Virtuoso Work Performance at the Montreal International Violin Competition, and was awarded the Prize for Best Performance of the Commissioned Work at the Menuhin Competition. She is also a prizewinner at the Seoul International Violin Competition and a recipient of the Manfred Grommek Prize from the Kronberg Academy’s Violin Masterclasses, and she has been honored with Salon de Virtuosi’s Charlotte White Career Grant, celebrating her exceptional artistry and promise."

🎉🏆 Bravo to Georgii Moroz, the winner of the Singapore International Violin Competition 2026 and our very own alumnus from @ystconservatory! 🎻🎵

The Ukrainian violinist was joined in the @sivcsg Grand Finals on 7 February 2026 by Danish violinist Michael Germer and Chinese violinist Zou Meng, who placed second and third respectively. Zou Meng also graduated from YST, making this not just the first time a YST alumnus has won, but also the first time that two of our alumni made it to the Grand Finals. #NUSAlumni

Now in its fourth edition, the competition continues to attract exceptional violinists under the age of 30 from around the world to showcase their musical virtuosity and compete for over US$110,000 in prizes and other opportunities, including concert engagements with prestigious orchestras and fine violin loans from the Rin Collection.

As we move into the final rounds of @sivcsg 2026, I’m reminded of why platforms like this matter so deeply to @ystconservatory and to the wider musical ecosystem.

It’s been inspiring to witness the artistic journeys unfolding over the last week. Beyond the competition stage, masterclasses for our local community and the continued strengthening of partnerships reflect our commitment to musical dialogue and artistic exchange. At its heart, this is what we do as a school - supporting the growth of young musicians, nurturing excellence, and shaping the future of the industry in Singapore and beyond.

And yes: even had a go at playing on a rare Stradivarius from the Rin Collection (thanks to Rin Hong Wei, grandson of the late Mr Rin himself, for guidance and support). As a composer - not a violinist - this was very much an exercise in curiosity rather than competence. But a highly memorable opportunity nonetheless! 🎻
