BULKING TIPS FOR LOW APPETITES

I am naturally a “hard gainer”. Meaning I tend to have a lower appetite. Here are some tricks that’s currently helping me stay in a surplus.

1. Simple carbs: I use these for morning workouts. When food volume has to be high I take advantage of quick fuel I’ll utilize for a lift.

2. Liquid carbs: Juice is great here. They aren’t completely empty carbs and provide some vitamins. Great to use pre and post workout to maximize performance, fullness and recovery.

3. Liquid fats: fat intake for me is almost always on the lower end, but various oils have low food volume. Olive and avocado oil is what I prefer.

4. Liquifying meals: the act of chewing is actually a mechanism to thwart hunger. Liquifying eliminates this and minimizes food volume and stretch response of the stomach. Try protein powders, juices, honey, fruits etc.

5. Easing fiber down: fiber is very effective for hunger control. I try to keep fiber constant as the diet increases, meaning with more calories I’ll need to swap out carb sources and often lower vegetable intake.

6. Partially broken down protein: tend to be faster digesting and require less energy from the digestive system to break down. Ground meats are great for this purpose.

7. Increasing testosterone: my hunger is much higher when using testosterone replacement. This could be a good options for some, but even if it is not, some OTC supplements and prescriptions can improve levels and limit side effects more than TRT.

Every week you progress is a blessing and encouraging!
Long gaining phases can be tough. It’s hard to discern at times if the weight that you’re putting on is good weight. How much is fat and how much is muscle is hard to determine, as your experience level, the phase that your in, your rate of gain, and otherwise are all factors. Because of this, it can be easy to lose a sense of motivation or determination.
So what CAN we do?
One of the main things is progression in the gym. Are you getting stronger? Can you perform more reps? Are you approaching failure AND still improving in most lifts, particularly in muscle groups you’re trying to grow?
If the answer is yes, then the rest is often trusting the process. Get your amount of protein in, make sure rate of gain isn’t too fast, and that the muscle groups you’re trying to hit are in fact the limiting factors. If you trained chest, is your chest the most sore/fatigued, or your front delt??
If you’re doing all of these things, and your numbers are going up, chances are you’re building muscle! Keep it up!

Proud of this lift last Saturday, hadn’t done incline barbell press in a long time, so progression here has been very solid thus far! I don’t expect this rate of improvement to be super sustainable in near future, but I’ll take it when I can get it!

8 Year Transformation

This came up on my feed, and just wanted to use it as an excuse to Praise God and to encourage others. My life has changed wildly between these two photos. And for the better. Not because I got disciplined, or because I pulled myself up from my bootstraps, or because I found meaning through marriage, the gym, the workplace, or in community. But because I came to know Christ between these photos. I idolized and worshipped the created, rather than the creator Himself. Focused on performing and earning other’s approval in sport and in school. God gave me away to my idols and my flesh so that I might see that if I was given what I longed for in this world, it would fall short of receiving Jesus.

Life is hard, and I’ve seen my fair share of troubles, but now I have an eternal hope that does not waiver, even in the darkest of times. Blessed and grateful that I have been able to pursue training and physique sport. It went from an unhealthy coping mechanism and outlet years ago to yet another sanctifying experience and something I can praise God for.

There is no speeding up time. Bodybuilding years stack up slowly. The best we can do is love the lifestyle and commit to it long term.

A major mistake I hear competitors say is claiming they are going to go pro. I get it, you’re trying to manifest something, but that’s not the right attitude in my opinion.

Just find a good coach, execute everyday and let time play out as it may. Likely you’ve already been working out for some time, so what’s a couple more years.

There’s nothing wrong with starting to compete before you have the muscle to go pro. Many of my clients want to see if they like it and if they foresee a future in it. But, if you want to go far, go slow. Build for many years and take your time.

The best way to make it through the years of building and preparing for a prep are just to love what you’re doing. If you don’t, there’s other ventures that can be rewarding as well.

There’s no need to do way too many PEDs or eat excessively. The body can only grow so fast. PEDs can speed this up but are usually met with health phases, pull backs or medical complications. Be smart.

Lastly, keep in mind, you may commit to this for 20 years, do every drug available, and execute to a T and still not have the ability to go far. That’s ok, do it because you love it. There are genetic components to this game. I probably would have a heart attack before I could get big enough for open. That’s a genetic limitation for me and we all have limitations and challenges. But just like any sport not everyone can be a professional. But I’d be willing to say many could go far, even to the pro level in a division if they truly committed. Okay YOUR hand to the best of your ability!
