What a privilege to present at the beautiful Mount Nelson Hotel yesterday.
I spoke to colleagues about Epicelline, the epigenetic science behind it, and how it can be incorporated into an evidence-based skincare routine. Our skin’s genes don’t change, but the way they are switched on and off does. Understanding that opens up an exciting new chapter in how we think about skin ageing.

I experienced the new Multi-Peel treatment from @esthedermza today at the beautiful @skinfocus_cpt in Century City, Cape Town – and my skin feels incredibly soft, smooth, hydrated and plump.

What makes the Multi-Peel particularly interesting is that it can be completely personalised by “zoning” the skin. Rather than using one peel across the entire face, different peeling gels can be selected and applied to individual areas according to what the skin needs.

There are three main options – Radiance, Blemish and Youth – and I had a combination of all three. Blemish was applied to the hormonal acne around my chin (a pimple named Janine), while Radiance and Youth were used across different areas of my face, neck and upper lip.

Despite all that peeling action, I’d rate the “spiciness” at only around 2/10. It was surprisingly gentle and comfortable.

The treatment finished with the most satisfying peptide gel mask, which sets on the skin before being peeled away in pieces. If you love a peel-off mask, you’ll understand 😍

Immediately afterwards, my skin felt beautifully smooth, hydrated and plump, with no downtime for me at all.

The Multi-Peel can be tailored to different ages and skin concerns, including blemish-prone and teenage skin, dullness, uneven tone, texture and visible signs of ageing. It can also form part of a broader professional skin programme alongside treatments such as microneedling and laser, where clinically appropriate.

Institut Esthederm is part of @naosglobal and takes an ecobiological approach to skincare – working with the skin’s natural biology and ecosystem rather than treating every skin in exactly the same way.

A very clever, customisable approach to peeling – and my skin loved it.

📚 New publication!

Delighted to share our recently published systematic review and meta-analysis examining the prevalence and risk factors for scabies among children and adolescents across Africa. Across 35 studies involving more than 45,000 participants, the findings highlight the substantial burden of this neglected tropical disease and its close association with socioeconomic factors.

👏 A huge congratulations to Zunaid Ahmed, who led this important work. Well done, Zunaid — a fantastic achievement!

Wow — what a wonderful week at the DSSA Congress 2026 in Pretoria! 🇿🇦✨

From starting the week with the L’Oréal dinner, the Skin of Colour Symposium, the Galderma Breakfast Symposium, and the Eucerin evening, to having the privilege of giving two lectures on the DSSA scientific programme — it has been an incredibly rewarding few days.

The week ended on such a high with a fantastic Gala Dinner and the tremendous honour of being elected President of the Dermatological Society of South Africa (DSSA). I am truly grateful for the opportunity to serve our dermatology community in this new role.

And, of course, incredibly proud of our Tygerberg/Stellenbosch dermatology team and all their wonderful achievements at the congress. 🏆👏 Seeing our registrars and colleagues doing so well makes it even more special.

It is wonderful to see South African dermatology flourishing — with such incredible talent, collaboration, friendship and passion for our specialty.

📖 New Publication Alert!

I’m delighted to share our latest open-access publication in Photodermatology, Photoimmunology & Photomedicine: “Beyond Tint: Active Ingredient Strategies for Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation due to Visible Light in Skin of Color.”

In this commentary, we explore a practical challenge in dermatology: What should we recommend when patients cannot tolerate tinted sunscreens? We review the emerging evidence supporting an alternative strategy—combining strong UVA1 photoprotection with targeted anti-pigment ingredients. We specifically discuss the evidence for Melasyl (2-MNG), Thiamidol, and Polypodium leucotomos (Fernblock) as promising options to reduce visible light-induced hyperpigmentation in patients with skin of colour.

Acne is far more than a visible skin condition. It can affect confidence, emotional well-being and how people engage with the world around them.

Effective acne care therefore needs to address the entire spectrum of the condition — from the physical signs and risk of scarring to the very real psychological and social impact.
