I’m Marlene. I’m 51, and I’m not trying to look like an earlier version of myself šŸ¤

This month I am sharing the 3 parts of my reinvention that feel most personal: gray hair, skincare, and fashion.

I’ve been an aesthetician since 2008, I’m 16 months dye free, and I love an outfit that makes getting dressed feel like an occasion.

I can embrace my gray hair and still care deeply about my skin. I can love fashion and choose clothes for who I am today. Accepting my age doesn’t mean losing interest in how I look.

That’s what reinvention at 51 looks like for me: paying attention to what I love, what I’ve outgrown, and what I want to try next.

Here, I share gray hair, skincare expertise, and fashion with the hope that you’ll find something useful—or the nudge to wear something you’ve been saving for ā€œsomeday.ā€

I want to feel powerful at this age. And I want that for you, too.

Tell me: what’s something you’ve finally given yourself permission to do?

I’m getting older, my hair is getting grayer, and somehow we’re both looking better. What a plot twist. šŸ˜‚ @mjgray__ nailed it! šŸ”ˆ

If you’re thinking about going gray, here are six things that helped me:

1. Know why you want to do it. There will be days when someone else’s opinion feels louder than your own. Come back to your reason.
2. Make peace with the awkward phase. Seeing your old color next to your new growth can test your patience. It’s a stage of the process, not the final picture.
3. Do it at your own pace. I’ve been cutting away the dyed ends gradually. Every cut feels like a little more of me showing up.
4. Take the photos, even when you don’t love the mirror. Some days I felt like nothing was changing. Looking back showed me how far I’d come.
5. Don’t put your life on hold until your hair is ā€œdone.ā€ Wear the beautiful clothes. Go out. Be in the pictures. You’re here now.
6. Let it be your choice. You don’t need anyone else to understand why you want to go gray. You deserve to find out how you feel about it.

I’m still growing mine out. Some days are easier than others, but I’m glad I gave myself permission to start. šŸ¤
