When you are above the clouds with the Sun behind you, your shadow can fall onto the cloud layer below. Clouds are made of countless tiny water droplets, and each droplet behaves like a little mirror and lens at the same time. When sunlight hits these droplets, the light scatters in many directions, but the strongest scattering happens straight back toward the light source. This backward reflection is called backscattering. Because you stand exactly between the Sun and the cloud, this backscattered light returns to your eyes in a perfect circle around your shadow. This creates the bright ring you see. The effect is known as a glory, not a halo. A halo is formed by ice crystals and appears very high in the sky, while a glory specifically forms around the shadow of an object on clouds or fog. The colors appear because light waves entering each droplet bend, bounce inside, and interfere with each other. Only certain wavelengths return strongly in your direction, so your eyes see soft rings of color. Millions of droplets doing this at the same time create the complete colored pattern. A simple way to imagine it is to think of ripples in a pond after you drop a pebble. Light also behaves like waves, and when those waves interact with water droplets, they form circular patterns. The atmosphere is essentially sketching a rainbow target around your own shadow using sunlight and tiny droplets acting together. 📹 - @skyhighish (Posted with permission)
