"I know they say you should separate the art from the artist. I mean, he's a really cool guy and all but his pottery is just so mid."

Some photos from All Access.

Our Table Leaders came from far and wide to pour into and engage with Asheville’s young professionals.

Seated inside the halls of a country club Edith Vanderbilt helped bring to life more than a century ago, Biltmore Forest Country Club could not have been a more fitting setting for All Access.

Most professional events are pretty terrible. Same people at every one. Same conversations. Same small talk.

The people we brought to Asheville are people others spend thousands of dollars to hear from a stage, hoping maybe they’ll get thirty seconds with them afterward or a handshake over a book signing.

We stripped all of that away.

We brought them here, sat them around eight tables, and gave our young professionals real time with them. Fifteen minutes at a time. Four different conversations. No stage between them.

Notes were taken. Relationships were started. Contact information was exchanged. And we would bet there were quite a few follow-ups happening this morning.

This kind of access does not happen anywhere else in Asheville. Neither does leadership development quite like this. We were not interested in recreating the same event people have already been to a hundred times. We wanted to build something that raised the bar.

These aren’t just the leaders of some far-off future. These are the people who will be sitting in executive offices, running nonprofits, starting companies, serving on boards and holding public office five and ten years from now. They are quite literally the future of this city.

So you have to build things worthy of them. Create events impressive enough that they want to be in the room. Make it worth their time and their money. Give them a reason to get dressed up, gather together and meet people they would not otherwise meet.

Bring them into rooms they may not normally have access to yet. Put them across the table from people who are several chapters ahead of them. Because one conversation really can change the course of someone’s career, business or life.

Don’t give young professionals a watered-down version of somebody else’s event.

Give them an event everyone wants to be invited to.

I'm losing my edge
To better-looking people
With better ideas and more talent
And they're actually really, really nice

Feels like I’ve been saying goodbye a lot lately. To those I love, may your hearts be lighter than a feather.

A poem about grief by Karoline Brændjord

No ballerina springs forth when I lift the lid
of the coffin. There, in silence, lies your body. It is
closer to me than it is to you. I have brought with me
an old music box and I twist until the glockenspiel plays.
I am not calling you home. This is merely a lullaby.

Kinda chic to root for the home team.

Kinda chic to ask the City Councilor the questions yourself.

Kinda chic to make new friends before 9 AM.

Kinda chic to actually understand your taxes.

Kinda chic to spend a Tuesday night on a rooftop.

July is a pretty good example of what AYPROS has become.

We started the month at HomeTrust Field for an @ashevilletourists game, launched our Government Relations Crew, introduced Mug Club to more than 50 people at @wheelhouseasheville, brought the @ncdor1 and @forvismazars_us directly to young professionals for a packed Lunch & Learn, and finished the month overlooking the River Arts District from @theroofavl at @theradicalhotelavl during a tornado - and still had a huge turnout.🌪️

We love spending summer with you all. Let’s keep doing it!

I live in a cedar-sided bungalow just west of downtown Asheville, close enough to hear the interstate but far enough to pretend it's a river. My name is Phillip Bateman. I'm 27 years old. I believe in taking care of myself, honoring my nervous system, and eating foods with a plucky backstory on the packaging.

In the morning, if my face is a little puffy, I'll use a jade roller I bought from a co-op that doesn't believe in barcodes. I then sit without looking at my phone, acknowledging my cortisol levels without judgement. I can make it 15 minutes now.

After this, I rinse with spring water I hauled back from a roadside spigot an hour outside town. Municipal water is fine for bathing, but not for intention-setting. I pat dry with a sustainably produced linen cloth that was expensive, but an ethical bargain.

In the shower, I use a castile soap diluted past the point of doubt. I lather only my feet and buttocks, taking care to avoid "energetic" areas. I wouldn't want to upset my jing. On my face, a coffee scrub made by a friend of a friend. Then I apply an herb mint facial mask, which I leave on for 10 minutes while the kettle boils.

I always use an aftershave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion. My trust fund is dwindling, but the results speak for themselves.

There is an idea of a Phillip Bateman, some kind of abstraction. A Kony 2012 sticker on my Klean Kanteen and strong opinions about local brunch options. But there is no real me. Only an entity, something illusory. And though you can sit across from me at a café while we both pretend to co-work, I simply am not there.
