Can you guess what this is?
Hint: it’s a piece that will soon belong to a 7000-tonne detector #AtCERN. 😉

Here we see the first ring of the @atlasexperiment Inner Tracker (ITk) Pixel Inner System, loaded with detector modules by teams at @slac_lab in early October.

ITk is a next-generation tracker that will transform the way the ATLAS experiment detects particle collisions for the #HiLumiLHC.

The ring will be located closer to the beam pipe than any other part of ATLAS, right at the heart of the detector, where protons collide in the #LHC.

The modules on the first side are now in place, and initial measurements confirm they are correctly positioned, providing an encouraging start to this stage of assembly.
