Ardnahoe. Islay. Cask strength whisky. Peated single malt. PX & Oloroso sherry casks.
If that opening line doesn’t scream winter weekend, I don’t know what does. 🥃❄️

Sunday. Snow. Cold air that slaps your face awake. A waterfall roaring like it’s paid per decibel. And me? Out in nature with a Glencairn, pretending this is a normal wellness routine. (It is. Don’t argue with me.)

Today’s dram: Ardnahoe Society 2024 — 5 years old, Islay single malt whisky, bottled at 59.1% ABV (cask strength), matured in ex-PX and ex-Oloroso sherry casks. Only 3000 bottles, which feels right because this whisky has massive “don’t blink or it’s gone” energy.

And here’s the twist:
Yes, it’s young.
But it absolutely doesn’t behave young.

This is cask strength Islay whisky walking in like:
“Hi. I’m peat smoke. I’m coastal. I’m oily. And I brought sherry.”
Honestly? Iconic behaviour.

Nose: smoky sweetness, dark dried fruit (raisins / dried apricot), spicy oak, a leathery edge, a touch of mineral/ash, and that salty coastal note that makes you taste “sea air” even when you’re nowhere near the sea. Proper Islay peat… dressed in PX and Oloroso richness.

Palate: oily peat smoke, caramelised nuts, dark chocolate vibes, warming spices, a little tobacco-ish depth, and that sherry-cask fruit that keeps circling back like a plot twist you actually enjoy. It’s smoky + sweet + spicy, with that 59.1% punch that politely reminds you: this is not a beginner dram, friend.

Finish: long, smoky, ashy, coastal, slightly sweet — like the peat refuses to leave and the sherry refuses to stop flirting.

And yes: this is exactly why I love Islay whisky in nature. The cold makes the peat sharper, the sherry deeper, and the whole dram louder. Some people do a calm Sunday walk… I do a dramatic waterfall scene with Ardnahoe and call it self-care. Same category, I’m sure. 😄
