Auckland is without a doubt Aotearoa’s food capital. Were one of the most diverse city’s in the world but our food scene is only developing. We are after all only a young city so we can’t compete with the likes of Melbourne, Sydney, Lisbon, London or New York - yet. I believe eventually we’ll develop a greater sense of our own food identity which is informed by those who have settled here as much as those who were already here.

It seems every year food gets more authentic. Cuisines which were non existent become the darlings of eager diners or someone new comes into our lives. Someone eager to share the culinary traditions of their people and place of birth. We are, after all, better off because of these connections. We must foster time for them and create safe spaces for these cultural exchanges. Such connections have enriched my life and given me great joy. So, reach out, share a meal with your neighbours, work mates or even better, an absolute stranger.

Sometimes the best Christmas party is the least complicated one.

A courtyard area. A running bar tab. Food that arrives on platters and keeps coming. No seating plan, no speeches, and no one stuck making conversation across a round table for three hours.

We have gathered of the best six bars across NZ, hosting group celebrations this Christmas. Swipe through and find your Christmas local.

#nzvenues #eventspace #christmasparty

1. Slattery & Sons, Britomart

Irish hospitality, right in the middle of town. @slatteryandsons has spaces to suit any size of Christmas gathering, from the whiskey lined Whiskey Parlour to The Bloom Terrace’s open air rooftop. Guinness on tap, hearty pub fare, and a buzzing energy to keep the party pumping.

2. Citizen Park, Kingsland

A retractable roof Garden Bar for the big group, and the more intimate Bike Shop when you want something tucked away. @citizenpark nails the American inspired dishes and handcrafted cocktails, with indoor outdoor flow that keeps people moving instead of sitting.

3. The Boathouse at The Riverhead, Riverhead

The @theboathousenz is honing in on smaller groups this year with a Midweek Christmas Club, on Wednesday 2 December for up to 30 guests. Arrive by ferry to the private dock, settle on the lawn with music playing, and pay as you go, so there is no minimum spend to chase.

4. The Cellar Bar, Viaduct

Tucked beneath Danny Doolans, @thecellarbar_dannydoolans is dimly lit and neon accented, built for private celebrations that do not want to share the room with anyone else. This space holds 100 guests cocktail style, with catering, AV and entertainment all arranged by the in house team.

5. Batch Winery, Waiheke

The views do half the work here, and the wine does the other half. @batchwinery is the Christmas party venue guests bring up again in February. Confirm 10 or more guests and pay your deposit by 2 October to go in the draw for up to $5,000 towards it.

6. Amador, Wellington

@amador.nz hosts up to 70 guests in the venue itself, or scales to 350 across the wider precinct if the invite list gets away on you. The menu blends Japanese, Syrian, Vietnamese and Malaysian flavours, so the food is a talk

Auckland Best Roast: Episode 1 - @slatteryandsons

Price: $36
What was ordered:

- Chicken Roast w a side portion of Beef & Pork
- Apple Crumble

We love a good roast in Aotearoa so it seems fitting that we try find, at bare minimum the best pub/restaurant roast meal in Tāmaki Makaurau.

The metrics will be:

- Quality of Overall Product
- Meat
- Roast Potatoes
- Gravy
- Atmosphere
- Price

Roasts are generally a Sunday affair and that is the case at Slatterys. At $36 it’s fairly common on the pricing but it hit like a roast that’s more expensive.

The portions are generous, the pork was pretty close to perfect, the gravy plentiful, the potatoes however lacked crunch. I did expect the Irish to master the potatoes but that was not the case today. I am aware not everyone likes a crispy roast potatoe so I’ve not marked them too harshly here. They get bonus points for their top up options. $4 for extra protein is great especially for those with larger appetites - me.

I was totally besotted with the apple crumble which was an absolute surprise. I can see why the chef is so proud of it.

The vibe, well Slatterys is always a vibe.

Overall the get a 7.9/10 which is quite a high score on my scale.

@slatteryandsons have just added one hell of a lamb shank pie to the canon of Pie Lore in New Zealand!

I had my doubts at first but they were cast aside the moment I launched into it yesterday. It will evoke the most carnal response from even the most refined diner.

The short crust pastry is devine and speaks to the level of care that is being achieved in their kitchen. Full credit to the chefs

Slattery and Sons spice bag has already gone viral and this pie has the potential to do the same.

Anyone concerned by the price need not worry. It is easily shared amongst two mates or dates and I recommend washing it down with a pint or 3 of Murphys.

This is another string in the bow of what is one of Auckland’s best pubs #aucklandeats #auckland #aucklandfoodie #aucklandfoodscene #maori
