Back in the day, there was a time when bike messengers used two-way radios, and 10 codes were a way to simplify communications, to express things quicker and avoid misunderstandings. Couriers used many of the same codes as police and firefighters, but also adapted the codes to better suit their needs. 10-7 meant you’ve arrived at a location, 10-8 meant you’re leaving a location, and 10-30 meant you had completed all you deliveries and were clear. 10-100 meant you had to go to the bathroom, and 10-200 meant it was a number two. Everybody knows 10-4, which means I copy, or affirmative. A lesser know code was 10-9 which meant you did not copy but was often used in protest when your dispatcher was trying to send you somewhere you didn’t want to go. For some reason, 10-9 became the code representing Messenger Appreciation Day, celebrated every October 9th. I reckon it was someone’s idea of being funny. In any case, 10/9 day is right around the corner, conveniently falling on a Friday, and here in DC, I will be throwing my annual 9/10-10/9 race.
