It’s one of the greatest honors of my life thus far to have been a part of this beautiful album. @beck thank you for being an amazing friend and teacher to me. I love you, man.

We wrote “If You Don’t Know What Love Is” in B’s backyard at 2am one chilly night last fall.

I’m also so humbled by the incredible people who played on it and made it all happen.

At the end of a long hot summer we went to Japan. I looked up my friend @kunichi_nomura with the idea to make a video in Tokyo. Through him, we met some incredible artists there who came together to help make a video clip for my new song Run Away. A big thank you to the director @mikaikarl and to @smaaale for bringing this idea to life. And a huge thank you to the star of our video, the great actor, Tadanobu Asano. This was all shot on location in Japan with the help of many talented new friends.

IN THE NIGHT @beck | 500T 3-perf 35mm

“The song, with its string arrangements and orchestration, felt cinematic, which for us aligned perfectly with shooting this project on 35mm. The idea was to shoot the scene in one take. Based on the timing of the song, we landed on 3-Perf and could afford seven 400ft rolls, each roll being one take. Working with Denis was really wonderful, every time he’d try something new, each take with its own interpretation of the song. The film was pushed a stop to bring in more grittiness and contrast, which lent itself beautifully to the location.”

We arrived in Paris in the middle of a sweltering heat wave with the idea of tracking down Denis Lavant. After some cold calls around Paris, we found him doing a theatrical production and spent a couple of weeks getting the legendary actor to entertain the idea of being in a music video, which he has not done for almost 20 years. He graciously agreed to do it, and the day we shot the video happened to be his birthday. We shot seven takes of film, each one completely particular and nuanced. There were moments that were so direct and personal the emotions in the room were palpable. The idea was to have the video feel like a scene from a film, something that existed outside of videos or social media. The music video captures his raw performance in a one shot portrait, where he artfully improvised to the song. I hope it captures some kind of liminal weirdness of the space where life is fraught and uncertain. I want to thank Denis for his exceptional work. His career in film has been inspiring and brilliant. He is truly one of a kind. It was an honor to have him in this. Thank you to Ryan Smale for coming up with the idea and putting the entire thing together. To Mikai Karl for directing it. To César Decharme, our DP, who so beautifully shot the video on 35mm. And thank you to Voir Pictures, Aurelien Drosne and the incredible local crew for coming on last minute to make this happen during a heat wave in Paris. The link to watch the video is in my bio.

Really proud of this one. Can’t put it into words. Got to shoot @beck new album cover for “Ride Lonesome”. The music is such an incredible journey to listen to, can’t wait for it to be out in the world.
