Had a great conversation with the Small Man Jiu Jitsu Podcast about my journey in Jiu Jitsu, my coach and the legacy he left me, teaching, kids, combat, and what I’m trying to build with Calabrese Combat Academy.

We covered a lot of ground and got into some things I’m pretty passionate about.

Appreciate them having me on. Full episode is on YouTube, go check it out; link in bio/story 🥋

I really enjoyed this conversation with Kyle Oliveras.

When Kyle was younger, his goal was to become a world champion. Today, his perspective is different.

We talked about growing up in Hawaii's jiu-jitsu community, becoming a coach, raising a family, and why success looks different at different stages of life.

One part that really stood out to me was our conversation about education and the advice he now gives to young competitors.

I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did.

This conversation with Brooklyn Olegario is one of the most meaningful we've had on the Small Man Podcast.

Brooklyn shares how social anxiety, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, community, and resilience shaped her life—and how, after experiencing sexual assault, she found healing through the people and lessons she discovered on the mats. Today, she's taking that experience one step further by leading research exploring how Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu may help women recover from trauma.

This episode isn't just about Jiu-Jitsu. It's about courage, purpose, faith, and using life's hardest moments to help others.

Whether you train or not, we hope Brooklyn's story reminds you that healing is possible, community matters, and no one has to walk through life's challenges alone.

In this episode we discuss:

🥋 How Brooklyn discovered Jiu-Jitsu

💙 Overcoming social anxiety

🤝 Why the Jiu-Jitsu community is different

💪 Building confidence through training

🛡️ Women's self-defense and safety

🎓 Her University of Hawaiʻi research studying trauma recovery through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

🏆 Competition mindset

🙏 Faith, purpose, and helping others

If this conversation encouraged you, please consider liking the video, subscribing, and sharing it with someone who could benefit from hearing Brooklyn's story.

https://faithandflowjiu-jitsu.com/?ref=LIN1 Check out some sweet faith based jiujitsu apparel company. Owner and founder
Nick Gerasimou, a first-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt with more than 20 years on the mats, Faith & Flow is about more than apparel. Jiu-Jitsu teaches humility, perseverance, composure, and the courage to keep moving when life gets uncomfortable. Faith gives those lessons a deeper purpose. It reminds us where our strength comes from, who we are fighting for, and how we are called to carry ourselves—on and off the mats.
