Justine Formentelli has been a long-time collaborator with Small Works CIC, participating in several of our group exhibitions, including Bury My Songs at Terrace Gallery in 2024, Seasons at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in 2025, and Women’s Day at Outhouse Gallery in 2026. Over the years, we have come to know Justine’s distinctive practice, with its rich, emotive layers of colour and texture. It was a pleasure to finally spend time with her in the studio and gain a deeper insight into the ideas, materials and processes that guide her work.

We are always looking for new ways to support artists and share their practices with our audience. That’s why we’ve decided to start a new Artist Spotlight series. This may take many forms as we adapt and grow, but we enjoy the opportunity it allows us to talk with artists and get a deeper insight into their processes.

We begin with Samantha Fellows.

We recently caught up with Brixton-based artist, Samantha Fellows, after our Women’s Day exhibition. She welcomed us into her studio, where we got a glimpse into her practice. Drawing on over 30 years of experience as a scenic painter, Samantha has been steadily reconnecting with a more personal practice, producing work that is now receiving the recognition it richly deserves.

SCRUMPING APPLES - OPEN CALL

For this edition of the open call, we have invited artist Farnaz Gholami as guest curator. Gholami brings to the project an interest in how memory, migration, and place shape contemporary artistic practice. Drawing on themes that also inform her own work, she invites submissions that reflect on belonging, movement, and how we construct notions of home across borders and generations.

“The idea of the exhibition is shaped by questions that feel personally resonant to me as both an artist and curator. Having lived between different countries, languages, and cultural landscapes, I have often found myself thinking about how belonging is formed, not as something fixed, but as something continually moulded through memory, experience, and imagination.”

— Farnaz Gholami
