A poem in memory of Sabeen Mahmud - @thesecondfloor founder - murdered in 2015 in Karachi Pakistan.

Performed at @frontlinedefenders open mic as part of @smashingtimes festival at @buttonfactorydub

Video has some archive footage of me performing at T2F a few months before Sabeen’s murder, photos from my time in Karachi and Sabeen’s vigil in London in 2015.

I’m glad I got to dig this poem out for this Human Rights Defender themed event.

The poem uses @selinanwulu structure of Before - a poem that has stayed with me since I discovered it in @theemmapress Homesickness and Exile anthology way back in 2014

Thanks so much to @frontlinedefenders @smashingtimes for having me at their human rights themed open mic at @buttonfactorydub

Shout out to @dobbychew who 10 years ago tomorrow was our Human Rights defender for the first ever Nose event in Kuala Lumpur. Thanks to Frontline Defenders for advocating for him after his arrest.

Also big love to the amazing poets I met in Maldives 9 years ago - grieving the murder of Yameen Rasheed who inspired this poem - recently published by @sabrtoothtigermag

Today’s bed bound editing - written 10 years ago on a trip to #phillipines with @feral.crust to a Bajau community. Tonight I’m performing at @frontlinedefenders @smashingtimes in @buttonfactorydub - it’s totally sold out but you can catch it live online on their Facebook

This poem will be published by @erbacce_press in 2027

This was performed at Invited to the Mic at @theamericanbarsailortown

There was a time when I thought my career would be international development, I tried community development too - in the end I feel I’m more useful as an artist.

We are delighted to share that Iqra Iqbal (MA student in Art in Contemporary World, NCAD) is one of the participating artists in Voices of Peace, a multidisciplinary exhibition at Smashing Times Visual Art Gallery.

As part of the Irish Art and Human Rights Festival 2026, the exhibition brings together artists whose work explores peace, equality, identity, social justice and human rights through diverse creative practices.
On Sunday, 11 October, the gallery hosted The Gathering, a wonderful evening of artist talks, poetry, storytelling and meaningful conversations, celebrating the power of art to connect communities and inspire dialogue.

It’s lovely to see Iqra’s art being showcased beyond NCAD and contributing to important conversations about peace, equality and human rights.

The exhibition continues until the end of November 2026. 📍 Smashing Times Visual Art Gallery, Dún Laoghaire, Dublin

Opening Hours:Wednesday - Friday: 1 - 6pm. Saturday: 10am - 6pm. Sunday: 12 - 6pm.
Free admission. No booking required.
