October 15, 12-1:30, Room B209 @smfaattufts . Indigo Geographies by Nina Gerassi Navarro, Tufts Professor in Romance Studies & Director of the Latin American Studies

Indigo is a deep and vibrant blue that seduced the world with its mesmerizing hues. It is also embedded within a fraught history of European colonialism. Using indigo as a critical tool my work unpacks this history across continents while exploring the power of its beauty and its recent use by artists exploring its many cultural meanings.

YOU’RE INVITED to experience Boston’s largest & longest-running FREE day of art, music & cultural programming!

And this year is extra special because Opening Our Doors is celebrating its 25th anniversary…

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Monday, October 12th from 10 AM–5 PM, the Fenway Cultural District is opening its doors to the community for a full day of exploring some of Boston’s incredible cultural institutions — completely FREE!

What started in 2001 with a dozen participating locations has grown into 18+ locations welcoming the community to experience the people, places and organizations that make Boston so special — and it’s an amazing event for families, visitors & Boston locals alike.

The best part? It’s extremely walkable! 👟

Start at the Kick-Off Celebration at Christian Science Plaza from 10–11:15 AM, then make your way through the Fenway to experience:

🎶 First Church of Christ, Scientist — explore the Mapparium to enjoy an organ concert, including a children’s organ concert at 11:30 AM

🎻 Symphony Hall — tours + an instrument playground

🎭 Huntington Theatre — a costume try-on corner + back stage tour of “To Kill a Mockingbird”

🎨 New Edgerly Plaza — decorate a tile for community art installation

🎵 Kaji Aso Studio — musical performance

🏛️ Museum of Fine Arts, Boston — FREE admission Indigenous programming + interactive art-making

🖼️ Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum — FREE admission Indigenous programming + interactive art-making

Both are popular, so reservations are recommended, & there may be lines to enter.

What I love most about Opening Our Doors is that it’s not just about visiting these incredible institutions — it’s about coming together as a community and experiencing the joy, creativity, passion & connection that art and culture bring to our lives.

And for 25 years, Opening Our Doors has proven that art and culture belong to everyone. ❤️

Back where it all began... Last night at @smfaattufts, Kaiju Big Battel was proudly on display for the SMFA Community Celebration! Our dedicated creator, @randborden and longtime co-founder @jeffuwarmouth were there to welcome onlookers to the world of Kaiju. Once upon a day back in the 1990s, we got our start here, and now we're displayed as part of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at 150 Exhibit! Here's to many more! @smfa.mfa @smfa.alumni

We believe that art makes the room. It is also incredibly
personal.

We found this important work, Andes Inverted #1, oil and soil on canvas, by Daniela Rivera @driveraclerfeuille at @smfa.mfa. Literally incorporating materials from the soil, this painting explores copper mining’s disruptive impacts in the artist’s homeland —at once environmental, political, cultural, and psychological—and evokes the paradox faced by Chuquicamata miners, many of whom described the jobs and joy provided by the same mine that consumed their homes, memories, and landscape. Rivera explains “their labor is both productive and destructive, the self-sabotage is the complexity
of the place.” Curating artwork that has meaning is another way for our work to powerfully elevate one’s lived experience in personal spaces.
