It might just be a matter of fact, but there’s something novel that happens in group shows ~~ where none of the artworks will, in all likelihood, ever share the same space again. Yet while they do in this one, and in caring for them, I’m still uncovering new connections and resonances that whir and chime around the gallery ~~ just like these shiny, echoing bells in the work of @pheobelaw and @lauralulika (images 1-2).

It’s the last couple of weeks to visit How Pleasant To Go To a Friend On a Visit!, an exhibition by Fruit Factory Guild members at Humber Street Gallery. The title is taken from a work by Hull-born poet Stevie Smith to suggest an act of gathering that is both nourishing and generous. (by happy coincidence Smith was born on my old street too).

There’s more to see than in this small selection of images, come by.

An exceptional new tape from Barnsley's finest, Sam Horton. This time operating under his OWA alias, 'Empty Bliss' is a clandestine set of low-slung drone and narcotic dub vapours for fans of Pessimist, Raime, The Bug etc. In short, the real deal. Now available online and in the shoppe. X

EMLEY, an exhibition and book launch by Spencer Hughes & Jake Barradell-Smith.

The Emley Moor Mast situated in Emley, West Yorkshire is the tallest freestanding structure in the UK standing at 1,084 feet tall. Completed in 1979, this Grade II listed concrete tower is a landmark broadcasting TV and radio to around 4 million people across Yorkshire.

The mast is known to some as ‘the jewel of Yorkshire’.

Growing up in Barnsley and surrounding areas you quickly become familiar with the returning sight of EMLEY. These images were taken over many years, culminating in one orbit around the spire in May 2025. They speak to the ethereal omnipresence the mast holds amongst the land and the complex admiration we have for it. This exhibition and book (published by Borough.Inc) is an ode to our love for EMLEY. It serves as a narrative of how we move around the structure both physically and emotionally.

Thank you to everyone who came to our exhibition!
We were so happy to see so many familiar and new faces 🤍
For @danet_art and @narna.lino was our first DIY curatorial project, and it means a lot that you shared it with us.

Huge thanks to all the artists for being part of the show, for your trust and amazing work — we couldn’t have done it without you ✨
Hope you enjoyed the show as much as we did. See you soon 💫

Artist showcase
SAM HORTON / @smhrtnn
-
Sam Horton (b.1996) is a photographer and multidisciplinary artist from Barnsley, currently living and working in Salford. His practice explores the formation, distortion, and preservation of memory within contemporary society, examining the ways media, technology, and cultural ritual shape personal and collective histories. Working with photography, found materials, mediated imagery, and personal narrative, Horton blurs the boundaries between the authentic and the reproduced to reflect on how contemporary society negotiates grief, nostalgia, and the shifting reliability of visual memory.

Discover more of Sam’s work at the ‘NO SPACE’ exhibition.
