As Madonna says in the song “Danceteria”: “Everyone here is a work of art.” Everyone in this photo is also the proverbial Phoenix that rose from the ashes, because we three, among hundreds of others, lost everything in our art studios around a year ago. But @smithbanfield.art has not only risen, but transcended, thrived, & rebuilt. We got to see her recently at her open studio & we are so inspired by & in awe of Smith. Raise a toast with us to this bird of a feather with whom we like flocking together. Please explore her art & we think you’ll be inspired too. #art #phoenixrising #sunsetparkbrooklyn

On Sept. 17 and 18, 2025, a five-alarm fire tore through a warehouse on 481 Van Brunt St. in one of Red Hook’s worst disasters since Superstorm Sandy.

In the months after the fire, the Star-Revue interviewed several artists about the recovery, grief, and their future as artists.

A year later, as the anniversary came and went, we followed up with three of them: Justin Neely, Smith Banfield, and Bettina Magi. Read about how they recovered and found their way back to their art, via the link in our bio.

481 Van Brunt — A space we love so dearly + call our home.

For those reaching out interested in helping our community rebuild: https://gofund.me/9095acc8e

Thinking of all the artists calling this place a home alongside us and all the hours of love and work poured into pieces that are now lost.

It’s been so great to reconnect with my friend Smith! We met years ago when I took her #headshots and #personalbrandingphotos for her company Clear Space. We haven’t been in touch in while, at least since the pandemic, then I saw her on Instagram posting about her beautiful artwork! We reconnected artist-to-artist over zoom and then today had lunch/shopping date at @blickartmaterials in #NYC 🍎 We were like two kids in a candy store! Be sure to check out her work @smithbanfield.art #artist #womenartists #emergingartists
