A home’s relationship with the land is visible long after construction ends.

Here at @theidahoclub in Sandpoint, tall windows frame the forest while an elevated deck creates a place to experience it. Wood siding and deep roof overhangs give the home a quiet presence among the trees.

Building in North Idaho means paying attention to what surrounds the home, as well as what goes into it.

What draws you in first: the architecture or the setting?

Before anything extraordinary can be built, the groundwork must be laid.

A new project is officially underway in Hope, Idaho.

The land has been cleared, the site is taking shape, and what was once simply a vision is one step closer to becoming reality.

Every great project begins with thoughtful planning, careful execution, and a team committed to getting it right from the ground up.

Good design deserves equally thoughtful construction.
Warm wood ceilings meet exposed steel. The stair and finely patterned railings keep the spaces visually connected, while expansive windows bring the surrounding forest into view.
Carrying that architecture through construction takes careful coordination, from the structural connections to the smallest finish detail. It’s the work behind the photograph, and it’s where we put our attention.

The most expensive construction problems often begin as unanswered questions.

Before excavation, before framing, and sometimes even before the drawings are finished, there are decisions that can have an outsized impact on budget, schedule and the finished home.

These are five of the conversations we believe are worth having early.

They’re also part of the thinking behind Guided by Smithwright, the process we use with our own clients and the guides we’ve created for homeowners navigating the building process elsewhere - coming soon!

Because a better build usually starts long before construction.

The most important parts of a home are often the ones you’ll never see.

Before the finishes. Before the cabinetry. Before the photographs.

There is structure, waterproofing, reinforcement, elevations, sequencing, and a long list of details that have to be right before they’re covered up.

Because once the concrete is poured, “close enough” gets expensive.

At Smithwright, we believe a refined home starts long before it looks refined. It starts with disciplined construction, careful coordination, and getting the work right when it still matters.

We’ve always believed a better build starts long before construction.

It starts with better questions. Better preparation. And knowing what decisions need to be made before they become expensive ones.

Guided by Smithwright is the system we use to help our clients navigate those decisions with greater clarity and confidence.

And soon, we’re opening up part of that system.

For those building with us.
For those too far away to build with us.
And even for those who made the mistake of hiring someone else. 😉

Coming soon.

Well, I guess this makes it official.

The first official Last Chair Studio piece went out into the world last week so it seemed like a pretty good time to finally give Last Chair an Instagram account.

And I couldn’t have asked for a better place for the first piece to land. A huge thank you to @smithwright.co for welcoming Last Chair into their space and letting us hang a pair of Volant Chubbs on the wall. They do incredible work and getting to see their space and what they create made the first install feel even more special. And thanks to @hdg_architecture for making this possible. (They also do incredible work)

Vintage skis + snowboards. LED neon. Scratches, stories and plenty of evidence of their former lives.

The website is live. The first piece is hanging. And there are a whole lot more skis waiting in the wings.

Welcome to Last Chair.

Most builders are afraid of steel.

We aren’t.

Steel asks more of a builder. Tighter tolerances. More coordination. Less room for “close enough.”

For us, that’s part of the appeal.

With more than 20 years of structural engineering experience behind Smithwright, Jason has spent his career working through the kind of complex structures and details that make homes like this possible.

At The Aerie on Schweitzer, steel and wood come together to create a home that could never be built quite the same way with conventional framing alone.

Complex doesn’t scare us.
It’s where we do some of our best work.

One year ago today, we walked through the doors of 120 Cedar Street for the first time.

It wasn’t polished. It wasn’t particularly pretty. And it definitely wasn’t Smithwright yet.

But we could see it.

We could see an old Sandpoint building with good bones and another chapter left in it. A place where clients could sit around the table with us. Where plans would be spread out, problems would get solved, ideas would become homes, and our team could build something bigger than any one project.

So we got to work.

A year later, it’s hard to remember it looking any other way.

This little building has become Smithwright’s home, and somehow, in the process of rebuilding it, it became a pretty good reflection of what we believe about building in the first place:

Respect what’s worth keeping.
Be thoughtful about what you change.
Sweat the details.
And don’t settle for ordinary.

What a difference a year makes.

We’re making the new siding rust. On purpose.

What? Exactly.

These Corten steel panels aren’t waiting years for North Idaho weather to develop their character. We’re accelerating the natural oxidation process with a saline solution, encouraging the steel to build the warm, rust-colored patina it was designed to have.

What looks like corrosion is actually the finish.

And unlike conventional steel, weathering steel is designed to develop a protective outer layer as it oxidizes, creating a surface that will continue to evolve with the home.

Sometimes building something extraordinary means doing something that looks completely wrong.

90° last week. Sweater weather today.

And suddenly, this is exactly where you want to be.

A little heat overhead. A hot soak just beyond the deck. Cool mountain air and nowhere you need to go.

The best outdoor spaces aren’t built for a season. They’re built to stretch it.
