“I think I was pretty early on the internet. My longterm roommate was a graphic designer so we had photoshop in the house. It was really like trying to download porn on a 56k modem and then wanting to do something with it that wasn’t just masturbating. Those were the first screengrabs, so there’s a kind of dumb technological thing about them where I was just fucking around”

“It’s hard to describe exactly what the work of Dennis Cooper has meant to me over the years. My first encounters with his work came when I was 15 and bored to death in my mall-parking-lot hometown in Canada, where I devoured the George Miles cycle feverishly over one summer break. Dennis’s work felt sick, obsessive and dangerous yet intimate and true - to call my relationship to his work formative seems like an understatement. His long-running blog was an endless resource for me in those years - one that I still study to this day, and which has undoubtedly informed my aesthetic, literary and artistic sensibilities more than anything else.
Whether writing fiction, non-fiction, poetry, or film, Dennis’s voice is unmistakably his own. His world is one marked by disaffection, obsession, and a flattened, often brutal emotional tone. At its center is the George Miles Cycle, a series of five novels - Closer, Frisk, Try, Guide, and Period - loosely based on his childhood friend and former boyfriend George Miles, who later took his own life. Music threads through his work - not just as reference, but as a kind of emotional logic. Post-punk, Indie, Lo-fi, and early Electronic music all shape the sensibility of his writing, just as much as his literary influences like Genet, Rimbaud or de Sade.
We met in Paris recently. In what follows, we speak about his new film Room Temperature, his creative collaborations, music, and the lingering presence of George Miles.”

‘You can Only kill us Once’ by the The Opioid Crisis Lookbook, Berlin Nov 2024

In 1996 Sackler’s Purdue Pharma unleashed OxyContin falsely marketing it as “safe painkiller” despite high addiction risks. Fueled by billions in profits, Purdue flooded the market as deregulation, bribes, and aggressive marketing drove mass overprescription,igniting the deadliest public health epidemic in US history; with millions of casualties and 200 Americans dying from ODs daily, as heroin becomes scarcer and viscous synthetic opioids fill the gaps, bank accounts and graveyards fast and steady.

By 1994, Kurt Cobain had become a voice of a generation. He was also the symbol of the transition from the pre-opioid crisis to the crisis itself, from the War on Drugs campaigns to a US where one in seven suffers from opioid use disorder or has a relative who does. Cobain never lived to see an Oxy, but the post-Cobain world experienced mutations of neoliberal logic that would sow the seeds of the opioid crisis almost immediately after his suicide. Beginning in the early 1990s, the influx of neoliberal modes of governance in the US created a system that made it possible for corporate interests and large pharmaceutical companies to promote, produce, and market opioids. Crises tend to expose the workings and structural elements of power logic. And so, the opioid crisis offers an understanding of the complexity of the modern socio-political and economic context wherein neoliberalism reigns supreme.

Yet, from the dark puddles of Martyr blood, endless cultures of resistance have spawned. Pin-pupiled ferals born into ice-cold embrace of death. The spiky cribs that nursed them were mass-produced by soulless machines owned by the likes of the Sacklers. Evil assimilated into neoliberal world order, that like the Nazgul king, in LOTR lore also cannot be killed by any living man. Luckily you can only kill us once and all of us dead and risen are undefinable.

Recent studies suggest that the death toll is expected to rise to at least a million more marytr deaths between now and 2030 if no radical change is implemented.
