● ISSUE 03 - Highlight: 8 of 12

——

From being told you had to be a cis man to do drag to running stages, budgets, and one of Philly’s biggest house parties, Icon Ebony-Fierce has spent more than a decade reshaping the city’s nightlife in her own image.

Told through transcribed voice notes, this story moves from Rittenhouse park days and genderfuck tracks at Tabu, through Miss Fish competitions, boycotts of racist clubs, and the birth of QTBIPOC shows like Raspberry Royale, to Snatcherella 3000, CURFEW, and a Black trans woman calling the shots as a programs director.

It is a survival archive of rejection, protest performances with a noose, suicidal nights, chosen family, and the moment “too tall, too Black, too genderfuck” becomes the person curating the room instead of begging to be let in.

PRE-ORDER ISSUE 03: NO ONE IN PHILADELPHIA

It's often said that knowledge is power. And if that's true, then in times like ours, knowing might be our most radical act of resistance. ISSUE 03 seeks to build collective strength through knowing more about Philadelphia, a city whose significance has always been self-evident.

The local Drum magazine challenged "minds" in 1964, becoming the most widely circulated gay publication in the U.S. Dewey's sit-ins moved "bodies" in 1965, one of the first organized queer protests in American history, years before Stonewall. Philadelphia also created its own genre that touches "souls," laying the foundation for house music, and giving birth to the four-on-the-floor kick that traveled from Philly's studios into countless music genres.

Then 30 years of Ballroom. Renegade parties. DIY spaces. Mutual aid. Block parties. Lumberyard raves. Warehouses. You name it. Philly has always had something for "your mind, your body, and your soul."

With ISSUE 03, we hope to make visible the people behind this city's wealth of knowledge: elders who laid the path and continue to build, new generations constructing different scenes, organizers reclaiming public space, trans performers and activists who turn heads then turn tables, historians, dancers, and beatmakers. This city gives far more than it ever asks in return. So, humbly, we ask on its behalf:

Know the history. Know the people. Know the sounds. Know Philadelphia.
