My best friend and her husband live in Indonesia, but by some ungodly luck, I see them quite a lot — but then again it’s not luck, is it? It’s effort. It’s making the relationship a priority, deciding long-haul flights are not a hurdle but necessary cost to be paid, embracing the freedom and privilege we have now in our lives to travel, a lot, so we can share meals, wake up in the same house, go grocery shopping together (a favorite). To have to moments of ‘ordinary devotion,’ as Maggie Nelson puts it.

Our most recent encounter brought us to the Dolomites. One of the best yet.
