One of the things I wasn’t prepared for with a senior dog was how much you can miss them when they’re still right there.

Toby sleeps a lot now. And if you have an older dog, you probably know what I mean. You can be home with them all day and somehow realize you barely saw them because they spent most of it sleeping.

You don’t want to wake them up because they need the rest. You don’t want to move them when they finally look comfortable. So you let them sleep.

And meanwhile you’re noticing all these little changes. They don’t follow you around quite as much. They aren’t always in the middle of whatever you’re doing. The house gets a little quieter.

I’m grateful that Toby has his Snoozer Pets Cozy Cave, where he can curl up and get comfortable. Even when I wish he were awake and hanging out with me, I love knowing he has a cozy little spot of his own.

I always thought having less time with Toby would mean I’d want to spend every possible second with him.

I didn’t realize part of loving him at this age would be giving him the space to sleep through so many of those seconds. ❤️

The Queen on her throne (which is actually her @snoozerpets elevated car seat, so she can see out of the window without legs) If I’m in the kitchen, they are in the kitchen… not to beg, but usually to sleep at my feet while I cook, which is sooo super fun and makes moving about the room, super easy and not at all inconvenient🤪🙄At least tonight, she opted to show off her nubs on her throne… up and outta the way. Before I had Amira, there was a “no dogs in the kitchen rule”, but when I adopted her, I wasn’t about to tell a senior, two legged, Thai street dog, who had been shot in the head, that she can’t go wherever the heck she wants to go… I’m not a monster!!!!!🤣🤣🤣#nubsonthings #thaistreetdog #twoleggeddogsofinstagram #nubclub #

Now that it’s getting colder, my dogs are always seeking me out for warmth. And as much as I love a good snuggle with my dogs...I don’t always enjoy being a human heating pad for them 🤣

These Snoozer Cave Dog beds have been great for getting them to warm up on their own! And extra bonus is that it’s also a great way to support independence skills.

When we give our dogs comfortable spaces where they can meet some of their own needs, we create opportunities for them to settle without always needing us to be part of the equation. Of course, a cozy bed alone won’t teach your dog to be independent. But it can help set the stage by making their environment more comfortable and giving them an appealing place to relax.

Follow @petharmonytraining for more practical ways to make life with your dog easier and more manageable!

Comment SHOP if you’d like a list of beds & mats we recommend to our clients and we’ll send you a link to our Amazon Affiliate shop!
