What do we carry when we leave, and what do we leave behind? For SS27, Los Angeles-based luxury atelier VENIA answers this with Dear, Sincerely, a collection exploring memory, migration, and the space between a final goodbye and a first hello. Founded by Christine Ko and Keeter Ly, the house operates on "Graceful Rebellion," balancing modern tech like CLO 3D and AI art development with traditional draping, dyeing, and experimental double-sided printing. Drawing visual cues from Second Industrial Revolution railway travel and LA’s identity as a city of arrivals, custom textiles like Forgotten Futures and Oxblood weave archival documents and rich contrasts into sustainable, slow-built garments.

Lately, some of my automotive work has been making the rounds, and for many people that may be what they associate me with.
But before vehicle work ever entered the picture, I built much of my reputation around years of high speed tabletop and practical effects work.

Many of the same skills that go into executing complex motion control shots on vehicles were developed on sets like this, where timing, precision, and repeatability are everything.

Shots like these are where I have the most fun.

It’s always exciting when I get a video text from @timothyhoganstudio showing the rig he’s built and his vision for a shot. Prelight becomes a day of testing rigs, refining triggers, and making sure everything behaves exactly as intended. By shoot day, it’s time to engineer the timing of everything, sometimes with a little math and the occasional dusting off of old kinematic equations, so every event happens exactly when and where we want it to. Anything we can control, we try to while still moving at the pace production demands.

On this shot, what looks like a simple falling bottle is actually the result of coordinating multiple moving pieces so everything happens the same way, take after take. The pneumatic releases, bottle drop, robot move, focus pull, and timing of the interaction with the fabric all have to be perfectly repeatable. Once that’s locked in, we can focus on the details that elevate a shot from good to great.
I’ve always enjoyed working with Tim, not just because of the quality of work he produces, but because we share a similar mindset when it comes to chasing perfection.
Sometimes it’s a trigger firing a little too early. Sometimes it’s a highlight landing slightly differently than envisioned.

And for us, that usually means one more take.

Then another.

Maybe another.

Until we get it.
