SocialRx: Healthcare-grade social prescribing

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

What if your doctor could prescribe you art?

Art Pharmacy (via @socialrx.inc) is a US social prescribing program. Healthcare and community partners prescribe and support engagement with personalized art and cultural events to people experiencing loneliness, anxiety, or depression.

A recent study by Bailey & DiMilia (2026) examined Art Pharmacy’s effects on 240 adults in California and Georgia. They found that participants’ wellbeing scores increased significantly, with WHO-5 wellbeing scores rising to approximately 17-20 points higher than baseline. That’s nearly TWO times the 10-point threshold considered meaningful.

Early evidence from one program without a control group, but it’s very a promising sign for social prescribing.

Maybe art belongs on the prescription pad after all?

At @uarizona, students seeing a campus health provider for anxiety or depression might leave with a prescription for a night at the theater. 🎭

Through Arizona ArtsRx with @uarizonaarts @arizonaartslive and @socialrx.inc , students referred by their counselor get matched with free arts activities, from museum visits and painting to glassblowing, plus a ticket for a friend. In its first year, the program drew 131 referrals, and about 80% of students who completed intake showed up to their activity. 70% reported improved well-being, more than 50% reported less anxiety, and more than 60% reported lower loneliness.

This happened last month, but I keep thinking about it so I want to share. What if your doctor could prescribe you a museum visit?

I went to a talk at Duke University called “Prescribing Art?” The big shocker: it’s already happening.

It's called social prescribing. A clinician refers a patient to a choir, a dance class or a gallery visit to treat what pills can't fully cure: hypertension, depression, stress.

England built social prescribing into its national health system in 2019. Doctors there referred 1.3 million people in 2023 alone. (Side note: there are more than 3,300 "link workers" connecting those patients to activities, a new kind of arts administrator!)

It's catching on here, too. Massachusetts already does it. and several states are running pilot programs. A World Health Organization review of more than 3,000 studies found the arts play a role in both preventing and treating illness. In an era of social isolation and total screen takeover, medicine has stepped in to move us back to the connections made by basic human creativity.

And the panelists are already making it happen. Chris Appleton (left in the photo) started @socialrx.inc after seeing the mental health devastation during Covid; they prescribe "12 doses of arts and culture" to patients managing depression, hypertension or obesity. MacArthur Fellow Anne Basting (in the middle, adbasting) has unlocked new treatments for people living with dementia by using group storytelling with @timeslipscreativecare. Dr. Sarah Wilbur moderated the conversation; she’s a professor at Duke who comes from dance but also studies arts infrastructure and creates in healthcare environments.

The coolest thing: watching the room full of Duke students, the elite of the elite, many of whom will become tomorrow's leading doctors and healthcare professionals. They were taking lots of notes and will be creating the future of what care looks like.

Play readings serve several purposes for theatre companies. They can help playwrights understand how their play is landing and what work needs to be done before it is stage-ready. They can help a company understand if the material is a good fit for the artists and audiences they serve. They can also be an affordable way to stay active during economic struggles.

However, do they interest the average theatre goer?

If you had a chance to follow a play from early readings all the way to a full production, would you want to?

Or do you prefer waiting for the full impact of a developed work?

Let us know! All answers are correct if they are YOUR answers!

Sometimes, finishing the script isn’t about waiting for inspiration—it’s about giving yourself a deadline. ✍️⏰

Playwright Lauren Lindsey shares one of the tools that helps her keep moving forward: having something concrete to work toward. Whether it’s a grant, residency, lab, submission, or simply a deadline you set with a friend, a little structure can help keep perfectionism from getting in the way of progress.

What helps YOU start—or finish—a creative project? Drop your best advice in the comments. 👇

Nada Yoga, the Yoga of Sound
Sound is often the first sense we develop and the last to fade. It has the power to soothe, to awaken, and to transform. In sound healing, we return to this primal connection using vibration to move from the external to the internal, from noise to stillness, and from separation to wholeness.
