BLOOMING Sustainability series, edition 72 ✽ Jo Nicholson on Aotearoa’s Social Value There is a moment Jo Nicholson returns to often. She was working in Whānau Ora Commissioning Agency when the work shifted - away from step-by-step instructions, toward kaimahi making real decisions alongside whānau. The discomfort in the room was palpable. “They weren’t resisting change because they didn’t care. They were worried about making the wrong decision, being taken advantage of or letting someone down.” What she watched unfold became a conviction she has carried into everything since. “Most people don’t need more instructions. They need enough trust to think, try, reflect and learn.” And the question worth asking is never simply what was delivered - it is what changed because you were there. That question now sits at the heart of Jo’s work as Director of Social Value Aotearoa, where she connects organisations wrestling with how to understand and communicate what they actually contribute to the world. The sector, she believes, has a persistent habit of measuring what is easiest rather than what is most meaningful. “Learning requires trust just as much as it requires data.”

How do we move beyond outcomes? Towards actually understanding and demonstrating value? A big thank you to Social Value Aotearoa, and especially to Hinemoana Durie-Shedlock and Jo Nicholson, for creating a space for this much needed kōrero. A privilege for &BLOOM Sustainability & ESG to be included in the panel alongside such incredible practitioners and leaders - Corey McAleese (Whānau Ora Commissioning Agency), Dr Lovely Dizon (Visionwest Community Trust), and Sean Turcel (Te Puna Hauora). The discussion really reinforced that value is not only something we measure, but something we build collectively through trust, lived experience, and ongoing relationships with our whānau - and that the way we balance measurement, storytelling, and credibility continues to evolve. Looking forward to continuing the kōrero.

Last year, an opportunity to collaborate with @socialvalueaotearoa emerged to invite reflection, provoke action and reject blanket measurements of value. A call to rethink how we define and measure impact. Being part of this kaupapa was a huge honour, only to then be acknowledged alongside Social Value Aotearoa and @motionsicknessstudio at the 2025 NZ @bestdesignawards with purple, gold and silver pins. Our gratitude for the trust to weave this concept to life continues to flow, as we learned this collaboration recently won a wood pencil at the 2026 @d_and_ad awards. While we never create with accolades in mind, this recognition by our design community reiterates the depth, intention and purpose within our mahi. Nei te puna o mihi, pūrena noa. Our appreciation overflows to everyone who has supported and woven into our Noa story.
