Saïd Ouled El Bey was born in Ostend and lives in Liège. He studied photography first, then sociology, then earned a Master’s in Political Science, a detour that turned out to be formative. His sociological training shapes how he frames, how he thinks about distance from his subjects, and how he reads an image as a fragment of something larger.

He came back to the streets in 2021, and has since built a practice around themes he describes as both personal and social: identity, belonging, multiculturalism, the tension between individual and collective. He shoots with a Ricoh GR III, compact enough to stay discreet and get close without altering what’s in front of him.

He has a useful theory about editing: that the real self-discovery doesn’t happen on the street, but afterwards, when you look at what you instinctively chose to capture. The street reveals your biases before you do.

Hey everyone, @annamannaoptima here with today’s Monday selection. ✨
Today I’d love to introduce you to the amazing Belgian photographer Saïd Ouled El Bey. 📸

“My photography does not seek to capture an objective truth, but to reflect a reality as I perceive it — shaped by a gaze, a sensitivity, and a personal history.

Inspired by sociology, I explore relationships between individuals, their environment, and the subtle connections between the photographer and the photographed. Questions of identity, multiple identities, and interculturality run through my work.

At the heart of my images are people — their presence, their silences, their gazes — within cinematic, sometimes slightly offbeat atmospheres.

I began street photography in 2021.

Like a starry night, somewhere between sleep and wakefulness, my photographic practice now unfolds at the core of my dreams and waking nightmares.”

▪️SAÏD OULED EL BEY▪️

SAÏD OULED EL BEY @soeb_street

My photography shows reality as I perceive it - not an objective truth, but one shaped by a gaze, a sensitivity, a personal history. Each image is an interpretation of the real, infused with individual and cultural influences.

At the heart of my work are people: their presence, their silences, their introspective gazes. I create images where individuals enter into relation - with each other, with space, with the history of places - within cinematic, sometimes subtly surreal atmospheres. Questions of identity, especially multiple identity, run through my practice, shaped by a sociological gaze moving between the micro and the macro.

I began street photography in 2021.
Since then, it has become part of my dreams and haunts my nights.
