DAY 2.3: Moving Images and Shifting Frontiers of Multispecies Worlds

Our second evening invited conference attendees to challenge our conceptions of possible multispecies presents and futures. Our film program, “Moving Images of Multispecies Worlds,” featured experimental, ecological and speculative storytelling. The films’ subject matter considered topics across plants, rocks, arthropods, and humans. Following the films, moderator Genevieve Pfeiffer led a discussion with our artist panel - which included a Parsons freshman, a visiting scholar, an independent artist from the UK, and faculty from CUNY-Lehman.

Films:
Rhona Eve Clews, If I eat you, will we both still be OK? (Plant) @rhonaeve

Monica Duncan, Breathing as a Stone @marblemonmon

Sophia May, Bug Terrors @sofa._.mayo

Adam Vackar, Growing with Giant Hogweed: Embodied Research in Multispecies Worlds @adam.vackar

Following the films, we traveled to Pioneerworks for a conversation between noted scholars Suzanne Simard and Zoë Schlanger about plant sentience and communication. Simard and Schlanger are pushing what were once outlying ideas towards greater scientific and public acceptance, and the sold-out crowd at Pioneerworks was a demonstration of the general enthusiasm for this consideration of the sentience and liveliness of the plants we live with.

Art and literature are essential tools to engage humans in supporting multispecies worlds. 📽️📖📚

Today we highlight Moving Images of Multispecies Worlds | Film Screening.

This screening brings together a series of moving-image works that explore multispecies relations through experimental, ecological, and speculative storytelling, using film as a medium to sense, imagine, and engage with more-than-human worlds.

Moderated by Genevieve Pfeiffer (University of Oregon), the screening features: Rhona Eve Clews (Independent artist, ecologist, healer) with If I eat you, will we both still be OK? (Plant); Monica Duncan (Lehman College) with Breathing as a Stone; Sophia May (Parsons) with Bug Terrors; and Adam Vackar (Parsons) with Growing with Giant Hogweed: Embodied Research in Multispecies Worlds.

Together, these works expand how storytelling can hold ecological complexity, inviting us to see, feel, and imagine multispecies entanglements across different temporalities and perspectives.

Location: UL105

How can moving images help us perceive worlds beyond the limits of the human? 🎞️

[the pomegranate ❤️‍🩹]

"dig in" he says
the pomegranate lies in front of me

"i will bleed," it warns
"if you are not careful"
yet my fingers are careless, clumsy
i tear at the seeds, hurried, frantic

so red runs down my arms
the juice stains my sleeves, a branding
it screams;
"i am dangerous." "i am forceful."
"i do not know how to love."

hello mls im temporarily back my pretty boyfriend got me a drawing tablet and stylus💗
