I haven’t yet had the stillness to truly sit with this moment—
Not because I can’t believe I graduated,
But because this day carries a weight far greater than a cap and gown.
This day is a culmination.
A symbol.
A quiet echo of sacrifice that began long before I ever stepped foot in a classroom.
My parents left behind their homeland—
Their language, their customs, their people—
Trading familiarity for the unknown,
So that I could have a chance to dream.
This parchment in my hands does not bear my name alone—
It holds the story of our journey,
Of hope passed down through generations,
Of prayers whispered in the dark.
It does not just declare me a college graduate.
It writes a new chapter—one we dreamed of, but never dared to name aloud.
Thus, I wear my Áo Dài—to honor my beginning.
To honor the roots I carry,
Even as I rise.
I have carried burdens no one could see,
Fought doubts in silence,
And still—I rose.
Again, and again.
Because I knew what this moment would mean,
Not just for me,
But for everyone who walked before me, so I could leap.
Thus, I wear this cap and gown—to honor my becoming.
To my family, my friends, my mentors—thank you.
Your love has been my compass.
Your belief, my foundation.
Where others walked alone,
I walked surrounded—by hands that held me, voices that lifted me.
Every person I met became a teacher.
Every hardship, a lesson.
Boston College gave me more than an education—
It gave me a home.
A bond.
A transformation.
Thus, I wear these tears on my cheeks, and this smile stretched wide with joy.
I am grateful—so deeply grateful.
Grateful for this life,
For this chance to carry forward a dream sewn together by the resilience of those before me.
This isn’t just a graduation.
It is a homecoming.
For every part of me that once wondered: Why me?
And the answer, now, is clear:
It was never just me.
It was always we.
We made it.
I am no poet, and maybe that’s why this took me so long to write.
But I hope these words show you even a sliver of what this moment means to me.
This was my American Dream.

(shout out jana for flying out)
