Yesterday I heard Jay-Z in my head… “Anything, anything, I’ll do anything…” And I thought about how different my boys’ story will be from mine. 📚❤️ I failed every reading standardized test until high school. My single mom was doing her best, but reading was hard for her too. My dad never read a book to me. Hell I don’t know if he can read or not. I never asked him. He wasn’t around when I was a kid. Truth is, nobody ever read a book out loud to me until I was in my 20s. In fact, I don’t believe I owned a book until college. But cycles don’t have to continue just because they existed. They can end with you. So in The Quinn house, we read. We own books! We read before bed. We read at bookstores. We read on Saturdays. We read when we’re tired. We read because words become confidence, imagination, and possibility. Because literacy isn’t just about books. It’s about giving your children something you never had—and making sure they never know what it feels like to go without it. “Anything, anything, I’ll do anything…” And if that means reading the same book for the 100th time, doing silly voices, or answering a hundred questions about dinosaurs and superheroes… Anything. Happy Father’s Day to me. ❤️ Not because I’m perfect. But because somewhere along the way, a cycle broke.
