I love being a transsexual. I love Fire Island. I love being a transsexual on Fire Island. For my debut @dazed piece, I offer you portraits by @lindsayperryman and 1,125 words of my own on @doll.invasion’s mission to make every city girl feel like a little mermaid for one weekend every August in Fire Island Pines.

If the Pines itself is a project of fantasy built around the social, sexual, and monetary capital of gay guys and their desires, Doll Invasion affords queer men and trans people the collective dream of reshaping the landscape of the island and building a new way of being together—as friends, lovers, and beyond—while we fail together, too. We’re supposed to! As long as we keep returning.

An absolute joy and privilege to speak to @xychelsea87, @willieherself, @unit01barbie, and Fire Island Pines’ everyness herself, @thelinabradford—I wish more of my 40-minute phone call with her could’ve made it into this. Their collective voices echo and amplify a long history of trans women turning it the fuck out in the Pines since its inception as a queer enclave in the early 20th century. Let’s make sure that keeps happening well into the future, guys and dolls! We’re supposed to.
