Wore this shirt years before I ever met the legend behind @soilsciencefuckyeah Big thanks for the shirt, and wild to find out we work together now. The soil science world really is tiny.

Hi! I wanted to get in touch on behalf of @gnarcytribe. We've got some awesome jewelry lined up, and I reckon you'd be the best match to rock our latest collection of masculine accessories!

If you're interested, we'd love to hook you up with three pieces on the house! Yup, you read that right – completely FREE!

Just shoot a DM over to our main account @gnarcytribe (if you dont see a DM button, just reply to any of their stories), and our guy Shawn will sort you out pronto! But hey, don't sleep on it – spots are filling up fast, and we'd hate for you to miss out on the action! Cheers, mate! 🤙

Trees growing at #serpentinesoil As you can see, the trees are partiatly tilted. This is due to the strong winds in the area, but also to the #nutrientimbalances due to excess Cr, Mg and Ni contents that exist in these soils. At the second picture you can see a serpentine soil. #soilhealth #soilscience #heavymetal #science #secsgalicia2023

Healthy soils are essential for healthy plant growth, human nutrition, and water filtration.

Healthy soil supports a landscape that is more resilient to the impact of droughts, fires, and floods. Soil also helps to regulate the earth’s climate and stores more carbon than all the world’s forests combined.

That’s why it is so important to honour our soil with World Soil Day. World Soil Day happens on the 5th of December every year and this year's theme is “Soils: Where food begins”.

It aims to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being by addressing the challenges in soil management, increasing soil awareness, and encouraging others to improve soil health.

Over at House of Science NZ, we have a science resource kit called Soil Secrets/ Ngā Kurahuna o te Oneone. This science kit allows students to explore the texture and structure of soils as well as learn the importance of the relationship between soil and water.

Soil performs many vital functions and without it, we could not survive. Activities include digging, making mud pies, soaking wet sponges, and having hands-on fun.

This kit was sponsored by: Maanaki Whenua Landcare Research.

Cover crop, noun. 🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾 A crop that is planted to protect and enrich the soil (Oxford Languages). They provide many other benefits but here are a few: the slowing of and even reversal of erosion, gradually building soil. They can also provide forage for pollinators (hard to see in the video, but there were so many bees and other pollinators visiting the flowers). This was a windbreak and buffer area of sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea). It was nice mowing it with all the petals raining down on me.

Nourish the soil and the soil will nourish you. At the foundation of every great garden, there is a pile of Healthy soil and this year’s theme for National Gardening week running from 17th to 24th October is “Grow Good Soil”

As part of National Gardening Week, @yatesgardening has given people a challenge called “Soil Your Undies” in which they plant a pair of cotton underwear in their soil and wait 60 days – this gives the soil microbes time to work their magic.

The more threadbare the undies, the more micro-organism in the soil means the healthier the soil.

https://www.yates.co.nz/national-gardening-week/this-year/2022/

While you are waiting for your soil to work its magic on your undies, why not check out House of Science NZ’s science resource kit Soil Secrets/Ngā Kurahuna o te Oneone.

This kit allows students to learn about natural and distinctive features that appear in our landscapes like mountains, valleys, etc while at the same time allowing students to explore the texture and structure of soils and learn the importance of the relationship between soil and water.

Includes lots of digging, mud pies, soaking wet sponges, and much more.

This kit was sponsored by: @manaaki_whenua , @huttscience , TMB and @dairynz

When it comes to soil type, I must admit that I am a little (super) confused!🤔
So here are some words to help :

🇺🇸Gravel = 🇨🇵grave
Sand = sable
Silt/loess = limon
Clay = Argile /terre glaise
Loam = terreau (sand+silt+clay)
Silex/flint = silex
Limestone = Calcaire
Sandstone = grès
Marl = marne (clay + limestone)
Slate = schiste, ardoise
Chalk= craie

And if you want to know more I recommend you check the resources of @thegrapegrind or @cabfrancchronicles (➡️she recently did a great post about soils of Cabernet Franc in our region #chinon #bourgeuil #saumur....)

And merci également au dernier numéro du magazine Tanin qui nous explique tout sur les types de sols ! 🏜️

Et vous, quels types de sols par chez vous ? ➡️In English please! 😜
