Welcome back! It’s Women’s History Month and we kicked the month off with a woman many of you may not know about. Dolores Hope. Born Dolores DeFina on May 27, 1909, in Harlem. She grew up here in the Bronx and changed her last name to Reade when she began a career as a nightclub singer in the 1930s.

While working at a night club in Manhattan she met Bob Hope, and the two married in 1934.

She continued her singing career during the early years of their marriage, often appearing in Mr. Hope’s vaudeville shows, but she largely retired to bring up their four adopted children.

One of the major highlights of Dolores’ life was traveling with her husband on numerous overseas tours organized by the United Service Organizations (USO). Starting during World War II and continuing through later conflicts, the couple performed for American troops stationed around the world. While Bob Hope provided comedy, Dolores contributed musical performances singing songs

In addition to entertainment, Dolores Hope became widely known for her charitable and religious work. One of her most known contributions was helping establish an interfaith chapel in California dedicated to prayer and reflection named the Dolores Hope Chapel,.

Bob Hope died at 100 years old in 2003. Living to the age of 102, she spent her later years preserving her husband’s legacy and continuing her philanthropic efforts. She passed away in 2011.

Their marriage became one of the longest and most well-known partnerships in show business, lasting nearly seven decades. That’s your Bronx history!

Welcome back! It’s Black History month so we decided to highlight stage, film & tv actress Rosetta LeNoire. Many of you know who she was. She was born in Harlem to a father from Dominica & Jamaican mother. She was the eldest of 5.

As a child, she suffered from rickets, a condition in children that causes bones to become soft, weak, and deformed [due to a lack of calcium phosphorus & or vitamin D]. Her godfather was none other than Bill “Bojangles” Robinson and he helped her overcome it by teaching her to dance. Stage theater became her first love, and she was cast as a witch in Orson Welles’s 1936 production of Macbeth.

She was a long time fighter of racial equity and in 1968 she used her own savings and founded the AMAS Repertory Theatre Company, an interracial theater dedicated to multi-ethnic productions in NYC which still exists today [AMAS Musical Theatre]. In 1988 the Actor’s Equity Association named an award after her.

Although she’d been acting for decades, the roles she became most known for were from tv later in her life. She played Maybelle ‘Mama’ Harper on Gimme A Break. She was Leola on Amen and from 1989 - 1997 she played Estelle, or Mother Winslow on Family Matters.

LeNoire passed away at 90 years old on March 17, 2002, in Teaneck, New Jersey, of complications from diabetes.

Tuesday night we went to 148 W. 141st Street because this is where her family lived when she was 8 years old. So what’s her connection to the Bronx? She spent most of her life living in the Bronx. Her funeral was at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church up in the Wakefield section of The Bronx. That’s your Bronx history!

Welcome back! It’s Black history month and last May we were saddened to hear of the passing of Harlem native & politician, #CharlieRangel. We honored his life and career by running and walking over to an apartment building on (74 W 132nd St) 132nd Street he lived in when he was 24yrs old.

After high school he joined the Army where he earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze star for his service during the Korean War, where he led a group of soldiers out of a deadly Chinese Army encirclement in 1950. After graduating college then law school he worked as a private lawyer. assistant U.S. attorney, and legal counsel during the early to mid-1960s. He served two terms in the NY State Assembly from 1967 to 1971. Rangel served in the House of Representatives for 46 years, the 2nd longest term n history.

Here is a list of positions he held and committees and and coalitions he was on:

The dean of the New York Congressional Delegation, A founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus who then made history as the first African American member of Congress to lead the powerful Ways and Means Committee. He was also one of the”Gang of Four” coalition along with fellow Harlem natives Basil Paterson, Percy Sutton and former Mayor David Dinkins.

Rangel won re-election every two years from 1970 until his retirement in 2017 (usually with over 90 percent of the vote and often with more than 95 percent).

In 2010 the U.S. House of Representatives censured Rangel of New York for 11 counts of financial and fundraising misconduct. He became the first House member to be censured in 27 years.

So what’s his connection to the BX? He attended DeWitt Clinton High School here in the Bronx before joining the army. In 2022, Rangel continued his mission of service by launching the Charles B. Rangel Infrastructure Workforce Initiative (RIWI) at CCNY to boost modern infrastructure jobs in upper Manhattan and the Bronx.

Rangel devoted his life servicing his community and we thank him for that. He passed away at the age of 94. May he Rest In Peace.
