Hispanic Heritage Month

I had the honor of being part of the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s 50 Most Influential Latinos, honorable mention. Let me introduce you to Josefina Ojeda de Vega. She had so much wisdom, practicality, laughter, beautiful smile, enormous heart, compassion, empathy. A true matriarch. Even though she’s been physically gone for some years now, people still come up to me and share what an impact she made in their lives. If I have been blessed to get to know you please know that you got to meet my mom, Josefina, and if you were in the inner circle Pepita.
As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month I wanted to showcase the one that influenced me the most.

I remember when I was in elementary school I would have to translate every parent teacher conference, Dr visits, most any meeting. When I was 11 my parents retired and moved to Ecuador South America , I enrolled in school down there and it was tough, there was no reverse ESOL. I could speak Spanish but reading or writing was hard. So my mom had to go every week to meet my teachers. And I remember the first meeting, I was astonished. I had never heard my mom speak so intellectually, because I was the one translating mostly. But now speaking in her native language she was soooo smart. I asked her years later how come she never learned English. She said because of you guys, my children. You made fun of me and would laugh when I mispronounced words. That cut deep. The woman I loved the most I hurt so much. But she was LOVE, she shrugged it off and still loved on us unconditionally.
This award, these accolades are wonderful but now you know the LATINA Josefina Pepa, mom I so wish you were here to give me that hug, that kiss, La bendición.
Be intentional be that influence.
I know , I cling to that promise that I will see her again, that’s the faith I inherited.
