It’s Black Breastfeeding Week, and we’re celebrating 14 years of Community, Care, and Collective Power💜

Earlier this year, at the Birth Justice Care Fund Convening, we gathered a room full of lactation specialists, doulas, and maternal mental health specialists to celebrate the work to secure Maternal Health as a human right. SisterSong’s BJCF affirms that all birthing people deserve access to diverse gender-affirming care from pre-conception to postpartum.

This week raises awareness of the unique cultural barriers and stigma around breast/chestfeeding for Black families.

The Birth Justice framework is all about bringing our children into the world with dignity, autonomy, and justice, strengthening our collective power to create a future where they can play, learn, and grow freely.

THIS is Birth Justice. Starting with the caretakers and birth workers who take on the maternal health crisis head-on.🙏🏾

Through this two-day convening, birth workers from Georgia, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Florida gathered not just to organize and strategize, but to be poured into. Together, they strengthened the ways we care for our communities through the Birth Justice Care Fund while also reclaiming space to care for themselves.

✨Rooted in healing justice and collective care, this time together affirmed what we know to be true: we cannot sustain the work of saving lives without also nurturing our own. This weekend deepened our shared commitment to ending the maternal health crisis and ensuring that those who hold our communities are also held, restored, and resourced.

Passing the torch in real time from the 4th year to the 1st year BJCF partners 🙌🏾

During Black Maternal Health Week, we celebrate our birthworkers and Birth Justice Care Fund Partners. 🙏🏾

For over five years, SisterSong’s BJCF has supported BIPOC birthing people by providing free, full-spectrum doula support, maternal mental health therapy, lactation assistance, and essential baby items. Last year alone, the Care Fund provided:
💟 667 families with birthing items
💟 65 families with doula services
💟 over $345,000 worth of family support
to families in Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Florida.

This year, we’re hoping to reach even more in need.
