🎙️ Your journey doesn’t have to follow anyone else’s timeline.

Dr. Sobia Khan came to the United States from Pakistan as a young international student, wife, and mother. With three children, no extended family nearby, and limited resources, she attended night classes, exchanged childcare with a friend, and spent 10 years earning her bachelor’s degree.

She went on to earn a master’s degree and PhD, become an English professor, and serve in leadership roles at community colleges across the country. Today, she is Vice President of Academic Affairs at Los Angeles City College.

In this inspiring episode of International Student Stories, Dr. Khan joins host Soleil Perrin to discuss:

✨ Building a life as an international student
✨ Finding belonging and community in the U.S.
✨ The power of community colleges
✨ Creating your own educational path
✨ Continuing to raise your hand when opportunities appear

“I grew wings later in life, and I flew.” — Dr. Sobia Khan

Whether you’re considering studying in the United States or wondering if you’re falling behind, Dr. Khan’s story is a powerful reminder: there is no single timeline for creating a meaningful future.

Dr. Amanuel Gebru knows what it feels like to navigate a new country, a new educational system, and eventually college as a first-generation student.

Along the way, teachers, counselors, coaches, and mentors helped him recognize his potential.

Now, as a college president, he’s helping create those same opportunities for the next generation.

In our newest episode of International Student Stories, Dr. Gebru gets real about:
🎓 Being a first-gen college student
🤝 The mentors who believed in him
