Mafrouza (2007) By Emmanuelle Demoris
Mafrouza is a 5-part film shot by Emmanuelle Demoris over two years spent in Mafrouza, a slum in Alexandria built on the site of a Greco-Roman necropolis. Starting from the first meetings with its inhabitants, Mafrouza tells the fates of a few people who respond to each other in a polyphonic chronicle.
If life is hard in Mafrouza, everyone resists with grace and strength. Adel and Ghada, a young couple in search of happiness, Mohamed Khattab, a humanist grocer-sheikh, Hassan, freedom-loving thug-singer, Abu Hosny, an old loner with flooded housing, the peasant Om Bassiouni and her bread oven, the Chenabou, family of rags, Gihad, a young wrestler, all embody and tell this resistance that is theirs and that makes their neighborhood a space of freedom and vitality.
Mafrouza takes the time to enter this world to grasp its complexities, but also to tell through these stories the meeting between these people of Mafrouza and the one who comes to film them. Because this encounter experience raises questions of cinema and questions the look we have on the other.
And if Mafrouza gives the opportunity to break down received ideas about the poor, the East or Islam, he also questions our way of looking and living (in Europe or elsewhere).
