POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Time flies: A year ago, I joined 13 other artists at what would become a life-changing residency in Hungary.

We lived together. Learned together. Created side by side. I remember fondly our unique personalities just as I would characters in a timeless epic. We became a strong herd, brought together by the vision of Szmrecsányi Veszely Beáta (@szmrecsanyi.veszely.beata) and Szmrecsányi Márton (@mszmrecs), founders of the Horse and Art Research Program (HARP).

On Day 10 of the HARP residency (July 26, 2025), we showcased our work at the culminating “International Artist Residency Jubilee Exhibition” at the Lovarda Gáleria, celebrating the program’s 10 year anniversary. Here is the art by the women I worked alongside for 12 intensive days:

🤩 I recommend following each and every one of them!

Solweig von Kleist is a German-born visual and animation artist living in France. Her practice connects hand-drawn animation with contemporary installations and performances, and her work has been shown internationally and on platforms such as ARTE and Channel 4.

Recently, she has returned to her long-standing fascination with horses, exploring the bond between humans and horses through drawing and moving images. Inspired by the Arabian horse and its cultural significance in Oman, she aims to develop new research-based works during her residency, where she is currently in residence at IN-Artist Residency in Muscat

EMA - In ancient Japan, horses were believed to be sacred animals that could carry message between humans and the gods.
People offered horses to Shinto shrines as a way to pray for things like rain, good harvests, or protection. Because horses were valuable, over time people began offering pictures of horses instead - this became the origin of ema, or “horse picture.”

I decided to collect the horses story from the everyone. We are artists from various countries who are interested in horses for various reasons. Horses are what connect us.

I brought EMA plates from Japan and I asked everyone to tell me stories about horses in their native languages.
Many beautiful stories were collected. I drew pictures to accompany them. One of the characteristics of EMA is anonymity. I think this mysteriousness is also connected to anonymity.

I know EMA are used for prayers, but don’t you think these unique stories also feel like prayers to nature, horses, and the wild?

I would like to thank all the artists who wrote their beautiful stories, as well as Beáta and Marton.

A piece of film from The Flow of Life (France, 2022, 6’27) by Solweig von Kleist @solilart shown during Vidéo Volcan in Le Havre last week @levolcan_lh. The film will also be soon shown at Musée Tomi Ungerer - Centre international de l’illustration in Strasbourg @museetomiungerer for Ciné-Familles on Sunday March 23rd.

The transparent 35mm film has been gilded with 24-carat gold leaf. 10 drawings = 1 second of film = 3200 drawings = 42 meters. Drawing frame by frame from imagination. Engraved with a sewing needle.
And the beauty of the morning under dozens of centimeters of snow in Berlin.
Thank you!
