Halfway through our SAB program at @solm.land , sitting outside our little learning atelier in Calhau.

I’m incredibly proud of how far we’ve come, while knowing there is still so much more ahead of us. These past few months have been full, beautiful, chaotic, challenging, and deeply rewarding.

This photo feels like a small pause in the middle of it all.

Thank you @yahninreallife for capturing these little moments in between, too.

Silvia & Nelson. Dôs pessoa txeu special q conhecemos este ano através do nosso trabalho com @solm.land

[en]
Nelson, lead ceramicist at Terracota, welcomed us into the world of clay. He is our neighbor, teacher, and friend. Earlier this year, after the rains, we were cleaning buckets of clay in his studio. Today, that same space stands renewed, once again a place for gathering and learning.

Silvia is a local architect. She also experiments with clay, creating some of the most captivating pieces we have seen on the island under the guidance of @atelier_mestre_djoy_soares and @billywilsontheartist to great ceramicists of Cabo Verde. We feel deeply touched by both of these souls and are honored to witness their journey's unfold.

@yahninreallife has been teaching us to get behind the lens so we captured this moment while foraging for clay together with @outrosbairros coordinated by @jakenr13

To rebuild is to reimagine. From clay molded by hand to coastlines reshaped by tide, creation becomes an act of defiance, dignity, and deep care. Barro i Mar: Clay and Sea, Creation and Resilience in São Vicente, Cabo Verde is a story of transformation, of how beauty returns not as repetition, but as renewal.

For small island states, rebuilding is not just survival, but a declaration of continuity. Every gesture; shaping, mending, restoring, becomes a quiet revolution against erasure. In ceramics, we witness this same resilience: the belief that what is broken can be made whole again, that imagination itself is a form of resistance.

This chapter, The Rebirth of Terra Cotta, is both a tribute and a reminder that creativity is sovereignty. Through craft, community, and collaboration, new worlds are continually being shaped… patient, imperfect, and profoundly human.

A heartfelt thank you to the incredible creatives who shared their vision and journey with us:

Part II: After the Storm - Clay, Community, and Care

When Terracota collapsed, it was not only walls and roofs that fell, but it was the beating heart of a neighborhood shaken. And yet, from the dust of destruction rose the pulse of solidarity. Streets once emptied by floodwaters became spaces of gathering, where neighbors, friends, and diasporic kin came together, shoulder to shoulder, to sift through rubble, rescue what could be saved, and begin the slow, deliberate work of repair.
Nelson, Flavio, Nelton, and many unnamed hands shaped clay not just as material, but as testimony; a language of resilience spoken through sweat, patience, and shared experiences. Children and elders watched, learned, and lent their energy, passing buckets, stacking bricks, and mending broken ceramics. In every gesture, the story of an island’s endurance was written: it is in community, in the collective refusal to surrender, that survival takes root.
Here, there was no waiting for external rescue; survival was mutual, improvised, and profoundly intelligent. Meals were shared, tools borrowed, expertise pooled, and care extended to those too weary or wounded to rebuild alone. Clay became metaphor and anchor, shaping not only objects but the rhythm of communal life, a quiet declaration that São Vicente’s independence and its spirit, cannot be outsourced.
This is not just repair. It is an island speaking to itself: we endure, together.

Clay remembers. The sea rises. Heritage breaks and is rebuilt.

On 11 August, São Vicente’s floodwaters swept through homes, streets, and the very heart of creation: Atelier Terracota. This was more than a storm. It was a reckoning, with fragility, with neglect and a testament to resilience.

Barro i Mar: Clay and Sea, Creation and Resilience in Cabo Verde begins here: With hands that shaped the earth long before the waters came. With stories still held in the clay.

✨ Part II and more details coming soon.
