Taking a moment on this beautiful Friday to reflect on the incredible teachers and mentors who have shaped my approach to—and continued exploration of—singing & teaching voice. 🎤 🤍

1. Vielka Kelly-Weiss — The Vielka Method™

Always my #️⃣1️⃣ 🤍 I’ve been the lucky recipient of Vielka’s mentorship and support for nearly a decade. The study and practice of TVM™ has given me the tools I’d long been searching for to effectively teach and nurture young singers. Learning and utilizing this method would be my wish and wholehearted recommendation for any voice teacher out there—new or experienced! @youngsingersacademy

2. Dr. Jenevora Williams — Vocal Health Education

Dr. Jenevora Williams’ wealth of work and research, particularly around young singers and vocal health, continues to inform and enhance both my teaching and my understanding of the developing voice. She has so many free resources/content, and the courses I’ve taken thus far through @thevocalhealth have been among the most practical and engaging professional development I’ve had!

3. Jeanie LoVetri — Somatic Voicework™

Having completed Levels I & II of Somatic Voicework™, I continue to incorporate the principles I learned from that training into my own teaching. Jeanie LoVetri’s groundbreaking work really demystified vocal registers for me, deepened my understanding of functional voice training as a whole, and reinforced the importance of approaching each singer as a whole human being—not simply a voice to be trained. @somaticvoicework

4. Mary Saunders Barton @marysaundersbarton

While living in NYC, I was a mentee in the NATS-NYC Mentor/Teacher Program—an invaluable opportunity to observe master teachers like Mary, who is as warm and generous as she is an iconic musical theatre expert. In addition to all I learned from watching Mary teach firsthand, her and Norm Spivey’s book, Cross-Training in the Voice Studio, was an invaluable resource as I entered the world of MT from a Classical Perspective.

5. Nikki Loney — FULL VOICE Music

Nikki Loney and her team at @thefullvoice have been among my absolute favorite resources—and shining lights in the voice world—since Day 1! From their workbook series

Delighted to be back learning from @jeanielovetri and diving further into Somatic Voicework™ - an approach that underpins much of my own teaching work.

I studied Levels I, II and III of @somaticvoicework at @baldwinwallace university in Ohio in 2024 and the work has really stayed with me. Looking forward to exploring topics like somatic awareness, intuitive sound making, source based vocal change, and deepening listening skills as a teacher.

Always grateful for opportunities to keep refining how I listen, teach, and think about the voice. There is still time to sign up for anyone interested!

Heading to the US for the third summer a row, and this time I’ll be studying acoustics in Florida!

Delighted to be heading to the Embodied Music Lab’s Acoustic Vocal Pedagogy Summer Intensive at Stetson University in Orlando, Florida for a week of study focused on acoustic vocal pedagogy.

Acoustics has become one of the areas of voice science I find most compelling because, quite simply, it makes sense. Understanding how the vocal tract shapes sound helps explain why certain coordinations feel easier, freer, and more efficient than others. It gives a practical framework for understanding cause and effect in singing beyond vague cues or tradition.

Having spent time with the work of Ken Bozeman, @ianhowellvoice and @cbtyne, I’m excited to learn from them and the rest of the faculty, and to meet colleagues attending from around the world.

A couple of years ago it was @somaticvoicework - The Lovetri Method in Ohio.
Last summer it was the @summer_vocology_institute in Salt Lake City for seven weeks.
This year: Orlando.

Have had my eye on this course for the past 4 years and now I’m buzzzzzzing to go in person!

🎤✨ “Why can’t I sing like that?”
It’s a question every singer asks at some point.
The truth? Your voice is shaped by your body, your history, and your training. Sometimes the answer is functional (you just need the right exercises). Other times, it’s simply about finding what’s a good fit for YOUR voice.
Somatic Voicework™ teaches us that singing is a physical skill, one that changes with time, grows with use, and is always worth exploring.
🌟 Your voice is unique. Your path is yours.
And that’s the beauty of it.
👉 Save this post for the next time you feel stuck in your singing journey. @somaticvoicework

Soft ≠ Weak.
In fact, quiet, floaty singing is some of the hardest to pull off, and the least practiced.
Why?
🧠 It demands more neuromuscular finesse, not force.
🎭 It challenges the ego (we’re conditioned to equate volume with value).
🔍 It exposes imbalances we can sometimes “hide” when belting.
🎯 And most singers simply don’t train it enough.
In Somatic Voicework™, we start with light, clear head register on purpose, to build balance, reduce tension, and reset the system. @somaticvoicework
So if soft singing feels hard? That’s not failure — that’s information.
Let’s stop treating head voice like a fallback.
It’s a skill. A muscle. A choice.
And it’s time we gave it the respect it deserves.

🎤 “The purpose of functional vocal training is to prepare the physical instrument to stand up to full, free expression of emotion through text and music.” — Jeanie LoVetri

I’ve recently completed Levels I–III of Somatic Voicework™ – The LoVetri Method, deepening my commitment to:
• Building strong, flexible, healthy voices for any style
• Training singers to meet the physical and emotional demands of performance
• Connecting vocal function to authentic, stylistically appropriate expression

The nine‑day institute was an inspiring blend of training, collaboration, and community. Alongside Somatic Voicework™ principles, we learnt from speech‑language pathologists and a specialist in Trans and Non‑Binary voices — a truly holistic approach to voice training for contemporary commercial music (including musical theatre).

Grateful to the faculty and colleagues from around the world who made this such an extraordinary experience.

📩 DM me for 1:1 coaching and look out future workshops!

Where do I belong in the musical theatre industry?
That question used to keep me up at night, and it had come up in my studio recently.
Too “legit” for some shows. Too “contemporary” for others. Too trained. Not trained that way.
But here’s what I’ve learned: I belong wherever I’m singing with clarity, freedom, and truth.
And I can only do that when I understand what’s functionally happening in my voice.
The industry is full of vague directions like:
✨ “Sing from your diaphragm!”
✨ “Just mix it!”
✨ “Don’t be so classical.”
✨ “That belt wasn’t chesty enough.”
But without functional training, those directions are just… noise.
Somatic Voicework™ gave me language. Structure. Curiosity. It helped me stop chasing someone else’s idea of “right” and start owning my instrument.
If you’re feeling lost in the sea of opinions, know this:
You don’t need to change your sound to belong.
You need to understand it.
