Who would’ve thought acting would be on my bingo card?

It’s funny how life works. Something that once felt so far out of reach is slowly starting to feel like the next chapter I need to unlock.

Growing up, I watched Aussie movies and felt something in me .. I remember my parents watching Home and Away. I used to think how bloody cool would it be if one day I was on that show and my parents were sitting in their living room watching me on the TV.

It was just one of those little childhood thoughts. Something you imagine for a second and then life goes on.

Now, all these years later, I’m meeting people who are actually out there doing those things. People creating films, telling stories, bringing characters to life. And being around that kind of energy has lit something up in me that I didn’t even know was there.

It’s incredibly fulfilling being around people who make you want to create. People who remind you there’s so much more out there to experience, learn and become.

And I think that’s what I’ve been realising lately.

The world you dream about doesn’t always feel so far away once you start putting yourself in the rooms where those things happen.

I’m not on Home and Away. I’m not some big actor. I’m literally just getting started.

But I’ve put one foot forward into a world I used to only watch through a screen.

And that’s a pretty cool feeling.

I think we spend so much of our lives convincing ourselves certain things are for other people. That they’re too far fetched, too unrealistic, or that we’ve missed our chance.

But the older I get, the more I realise how much can change when you just start throwing yourself at something.

You meet one person, which leads to another opportunity, which opens a door you didn’t even know existed.

And suddenly something that was once just a silly childhood thought starts looking a little more possible.

I have absolutely no idea where this chapter will take me.

But I know how good it feels to be curious about life again.

Maybe the whole point isn’t knowing where you’re going. Maybe it’s just being brave enough to find out.

OPEN NIGHT

Curious about training at Paper Street?

Come and see the work for yourself.

Email your EOI to:
hello@paperstreet.studio

This Thursday, 24 September, we’re opening the doors to prospective students to observe a class, meet the other students, and experience how we train (passionately and consistently).

There’s some incredible work happening this month. Come and see what you could be part of.

Being an actor doesn’t have to be merely an itch you scratch every now and then. At Paper Street, you can start turning it into something real today.

Booking is essential.

Email:
hello@paperstreet.studio

See you in the room.

Note: observation is limited to one complimentary class per actor, per six-month period.

If you you’re ready to jump in now, a link to the application form for October classes is in the bio.

The modern industry increasingly isolates actors, with self-tapes often recorded alone in a bedroom.

It felt good to get back to the roots of this art form: human connection. So grateful for the morning we spent creating together with this incredible bunch.

Unfortunately, I can’t share the actual tape, as it was created for a feature film that is still in the casting process. It could have been a standard ‘camera in front of a blank wall’ self-tape, but creating it this way was far more fulfilling.

I’m all about going all in—but, of course, you can’t do that alone. Another huge thanks to everyone involved for giving their time, energy, and passion for the craft to make this happen.

Everyone involved embodies the ethos I value most: take every opportunity to develop your craft, play the infinite game, and be about community. The outcomes will follow.

Self-tape, you say? Nah, I think we’ll shoot the whole film.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped make this happen at such short notice:

👆 Some of Adelaide’s best!

(Manifesting us all being at the US premiere.) ✨

Special thanks to Dale on camera for helping me pull this together.

*Note: these images are stills from log footage rushed through a filter — can confirm Dale’s colour grading is far superior. Book him!

And also, a huge thanks to Tash and her awesome pop, Trevor, for the perfect location.

August.

My birthday month.

Privileged to spend it with these brilliant actors.

It never ceases to amaze me how truly powerful consistency is.

August at Paper Street has seen many new faces join the community, and also seen the return of some OGs who know the value of having a space to experiment and explore their craft and themselves.

It can be difficult at times to notice your own growth, but I can say that for the students who show up week in and week out and apply themselves to the work, the progress is obvious.

If ever you feel like you’re not getting anywhere, make sure your goal is oriented towards what you can control (yourself), put your head down and continue the work of the actor, which never ends. That’s the beauty of it—it’s more than a vocation… it’s a life.

We are blessed to share it.

September is already off to a cracking start with some very challenging material in the room (always a good thing!).

Paper Street actors have grit, they have soul, and they represent some of Adelaide’s best and brightest human beings.

Congrats to @elliefuller__ with a feature film recently in the can, & @somethingwithtash with a recent and ongoing theatre gig.

*Picture 3 is a wonderful example of actor commitment, coming in with set dressing and costume. The actors who go the extra mile in their training are often the ones who book.

I will leave you with this question: what are you doing in September to embody “exceptionality”?

Much love to you all!

James
