“I watched the match at eleven years old, so I’m not embarrassed to admit that the month-long intrigue around the World Cup evaporated from my mind as soon as it was over. But nearly three decades later, what endures clearly and just as enthrallingly is the eternal earworm of Ricky Martin’s ‘La copa de la vida.’” ⚽️

“The FIFA World Cup’s latest edition is marred in corporate greed,” writes Richard Villegas (@songmess) for the latest installment of The Mess. “For the first time in its history, the amount of competing teams has been expanded to sell more tickets, jerseys, and broadcasting rights, and the puzzling choice to host the matches across three countries greatly complicates fan attendance, both in cost and immigration requirements.”

“You might wonder what any of this has to do with music, but there’s a direct correlation between the digital slop of this World Cup cycle and FIFA’s growing disconnect from the working-class fans that made fútbol a global phenomenon.”
