“It’s folk, dreampop, bossa, but with a very deep indie songwriter core to it.”

Meet Bernardo, our fortieth issue.

A London-based alt-soul/jazz singer, songwriter, and producer, counting PJ Harvey, Gal Costa, Amália Rodrigues, and Talking Heads among her biggest influences. Born to Portuguese parents, she started writing songs at 10, fully intending to become a Fado great. But then indie music happened, and her sound took a different path.

We talked about how it all began (clarinet in music school, then guitar, and the moment songwriting took over), her influences (Paul McCartney and Wings, Amália Rodrigues, The Beta Band, whom she supported on her album release, Tom Zé, and Everything But The Girl), her debut album, a coming of age about being lost and wanting to be found, and the Royal Albert Hall as a dream stage.

guide:human is our interview series with rising artists, bands, and musicians on inspiration, process, and the stories behind the sound.

HERÓIS NO AR
