Today I’m back in Gisborne, dropping off the rental truck and wrapping up the On a Roll Tour. It’s a bittersweet moment. After so many years, breakdowns, repairs and unforgettable journeys, it’s time to say goodbye to the Pineapple Express. This van has carried Bigbada Boom, the sound system, and so many beautiful sessions and memories across Aotearoa. She’s been through a lot with me. 💚 Being back in my hometown for the first time since Cyclone Gabrielle forced my whānau to leave has brought up a lot of emotions. My childhood home has since been bulldozed, and being back here brings so many memories flooding in. Some chapters of life close in ways you never expect. Through all of this, I’m incredibly grateful for the support shown to Bigbada Boom and our Givealittle fundraiser. Thanks to you all, I’ve found an alternative vehicle to keep things moving. But it’s going to be a long road ahead, paying off the finance while keeping my business running and continuing to bring sound system culture to the people. Every donation, share, message and bit of support makes a difference. If you’re still able to help, our Givealittle is still open. Link in Bio From the bottom of my heart, thank you for backing Bigbada Boom and helping keep this kaupapa alive. Big respect to you all. One love, big bass, and onwards we roll. 🔊💚🍍

This Friday 16 October, we're back with our monthly radio show The Physics Room Contemporary Art Kōrero on @plains.media at 8pm. 🐚🌷 This is a guest episode from Sonic Hapori, a collective of artists based in Tāmaki Makaurau, working within the intersection of art and sound. Its current members include Anahera Jade, Ilish Thomas, Mariam Tawfik, and Milika Swann. This recording is a glimpse of the return of Rona, a sound system who first sang earlier this year during Matariki, and is activated here for a kaupapa with Samoa House Library, a street party on Karanga-a-hape Road. K'Road is embedded in the recording, with layers of street chatter. Thank you SH & SH <3 💋 This event was to tautoko Samoa House Library, an invaluable art library and community hub. Tune in live on Friday, or listen to the archived episode on our website after airing. 🐚

Current exhibitions | ‘Rona' by Sonic Hapori As the pūrākau goes, ‘Rona’ was a wahine of great mana. One night when the moon was full, she went to fill her tahā with water. On her way down the path, a cloud passed over Rakaunui, casting a shadow over her path. ‘Rona’ fell and cursed te Marama. Filled with rage, te Marama snatched her from Papatūānuku. With her tahā in one hand, she reached out for a ngaio tree nearby. When the moon is full, you can see ‘Rona’ holding her tahā and clinging to the ngaio tree, listening to ‘fat dubs’. “Kia mahara ki te hē o Rona” “Remember the fault of Rona” Here we celebrate ‘Rona’ and her fortitude to break rules, remembering her hē as a tohu for radical imaginings. Over the time of Matariki, she evolves from a tahā suspended from te orokohanga with an umbilical cord of muka connecting her to a pito of sound seen as a speaker, into a staunch sound system that will be listening to you until she’s ready to sing. ‘Rona' is on view until 19 July 2026. Te Tuhi, 21 William Roberts Road, Pakuranga Open daily, 9am-5pm – Free entry Follow the link in bio for more images and to read about Sonic Hapori’s work.
