Our next spotlight goes out to Sonny Steinhauer!

You’ve likely heard that name a lot this year! Sonny has earned 1 attorney award and 6 witness awards just this year, and has 7 witness awards overall. But those aren’t just any old witness awards. Sonny has two All-Regional witness gavels and was the top-ranked All-American Witness in the CUA Law division at the 2026 National Championship Tournament!

Sonny isn’t just a powerhouse competitor, but an incredible captain as well. For the first time in the ITT’s history, Sonny captained our B team to Nationals. If that wasn’t impressive enough, he did that with 5 newbies on that team, captaining them to placing at 4 tournaments this year!

So whether Sonny is laying down the law as the hammer of justice, talking about his father who works in “waste management” up on the witness stand, or fiercely leading our B team to victory, Sonny is bound to find success in all that he does. That’s why we have no doubts that Sonny will thrive when he attends law school at WashU in St. Louis next fall.

Sonny, thank you for everything you’ve done for our program. You’ve been a great friend to all of us these past 3 years. We couldn’t be any more proud of you and all you’ve accomplished! We love you🔨

Illinois went to Washington D.C. and came back with a trophy! For the second year in a row, the Illinois Trial Team placed in the top 10 at Nationals AND brought home the highest witness award in their division.

We are happy to announce that Team Blue brought home a 7th place finish in the Mt. Vernon division, with 7.5 wins, a point differential of +23, and a CS of 33—the highest of any team in their division that placed. We couldn’t be more proud of Blue for all of the hard work that they put into this season and this Nationals run.💙

Team Orange also had a beautiful showing in the CUA Law Division. Orange is made up of 55% newbies, and we are thrilled to see what they’re all capable of next year. In addition to that, we’re proud to share that Team Orange Captain Sonny Steinhauer brought home the highest ranking witness award in the CUA Law division, becoming an All-American with 27 ranks—the seventh witness award of his career, and the sixth from this season alone.🧡

We want to thank everyone who helped us send two teams to Nationals for the first time in program history—especially Kimball and Karen Anderson, without whom this trip would not have been possible.

Thanks to all of the help we received to get to this tournament, Illinois is now ranked the #8 undergraduate mock trial program in the country—and we’re not done yet.

We’ll see you next year.

I-L-L🧡💙

GENEVA ORCS RECAP! For the first time in program history… the Illinois Trial Team qualified to send TWO teams to Nationals. A HUGE congratulations to Team Orange and Team Blue for each earning a bid out of the Geneva ORCS to the National Championship Tournament in Washington, D.C..! In addition to our historic TWO bids, Brendan Burke also brought home an 18-rank All-National attorney award. We are so unbelievably proud of both teams for this turn-out. I-L-L! 🧡💙

The only thing better than Team Blue earning the first bid out of St. Louis Regionals?? Team Orange earning the second bid for an ILLINOIS SWEEP!

Not only did ITT secure first and second place with 7.5 and 7 wins, respectively, but we also brought home FIVE individual awards.

Team Blue Captains Brendan Burke and Anna Fleck brought home 18 rank and 17 rank attorney awards, and Anna also earned a 17 rank witness award, making her a DOUBLE THREAT.

Team Orange Captain Sonny Steinhauer earned a 17 witness award, and sophomore MIDDLE Adi Gulati went 18 ranks as an attorney!

We couldn't have asked for a better Regionals turnout, and we are so proud of both of our teams for the work they put in to make this happen. Next up... Geneva recap!
