The recent Ledson Fire and the Woodside Fire make it clear: this is shaping up to be a dangerous fire season.

We're grateful to CAL FIRE, local districts, mutual aid networks, volunteers, and groups like Sonoma Community Animal Response Team for their quick action protecting communities and evacuating people and animals. As of today, the Woodside Fire is nearly contained.

Both incidents reinforce the same truth: the broader pattern of longer, drier seasons and more volatile fire weather that we’ve seen over the past decade remains the new normal. A predicted moderate to extreme El Niño could intensify storms and create even more extreme conditions.

We delve deeper into what this reality means for ecological stewardship in Living With Fire in Sonoma Valley, a new series told through multiple lenses, exploring how a multi-benefit approach—from prescribed burns to habitat restoration—helps our landscapes and communities live with fire. Read the full story on The Ecology Blog—find the link in our bio.

This past weekend, Shelterly presented our first Coordinated Animal Response in Emergencies (CARE) Workshop in Sonoma County, thanks to a generous donation from Jameson Humane.

More than forty people joined a full day of training, including a table top exercise, at Shone Farms including Sonoma CART, NVADG, Napa CART, Nevada County H.E.A.R.T., SCLAR, HALTER Project, Nevada County Animal Control, Humboldt CART, Nevada County Veterinary Disaster Response Team, San Mateo Community Large Animal Evacuation Group, Solano CART, Humane Society of Silicon Valley and Sonoma County Animal Services.

We are deeply grateful to Dr. Amber Bowen for hosting (and for all that she does for so many people and animals), Criminal Bakery for providing delicious vegan cookies, and Amy's Kitchen for generously donating our delicious vegan meals, treats and drinks.

This past weekend, we participated in a multi-regional disaster simulation exercise hosted by @sonomacounty. We had the privilege of collaborating with multiple community animal response teams (CARTs) and community emergency response teams (CERTs) on a response to a simulated earthquake and fire scenario, providing emergency response, sheltering, and veterinary care to affected animals.

Exercises like these are invaluable for strengthening coordination, refining protocols, and ensuring teams are prepared to respond effectively when real disasters strike.
