A friendly reminder that The Spirits of Maritime Crossing I & II live performance and film screening will take place this Saturday, 24 October 2026, hosted by the Bangkok Art Biennale Foundation in collaboration with Alliance Française Bangkok.

Directed by Prof. Dr. Apinan Poshyananda, this special evening explores themes of migration, identity, memory, desire, loss, and spirituality through contemporary art, performance, and film-tracing artistic journeys between Venice and Bangkok.

Concluding our highlights from the 2026 Venice Biennale, the collateral exhibition “The Spirits of Maritime Crossing” proposes that the sea is more than a route of commerce or migration—it is a spiritual geography where memory, ritual, and ancestral knowledge continue to flow across cultures. Bringing together twenty artists from Southeast Asia and beyond, the exhibition explores how stories travel through water, carrying with them histories of displacement, ecological fragility, and enduring hope.

We feature works by three artists: Le Hien Minh reflects on the lingering traces of war and memory; Torlarp Larpjaroensook imagines "spiritual spaceships" that carry nostalgia and belief across time and place; and Sornchai Phongsa draws on Mon ancestral traditions to explore identity, ritual, and the sacred dimensions of belonging.
Rather than treating spirituality as a private experience, The Spirits of Maritime Crossing presents it as something lived in relationship—to ancestors, to landscapes, to communities, and to the waters that have long connected them.

Drawing from his Mon heritage, Sornchai Phongsa’s Totem series explores the enduring presence of ancestral beliefs within contemporary life. Through the symbolic figure of the turtle, a revered emblem of endurance, protection, and spiritual passage in Mon ritual traditions - the artist reflects on lineage, memory, and the invisible burdens carried across generations.

Positioned between reverence and skepticism, the works become meditations on cultural inheritance and the ways in which ancient spiritual practices continue to shape personal and collective identity. At The Spirits of Maritime Crossing 2026, Phongsa presents two works: Turtle’s Spirits Totem 03 (2019) and Mon’s Spirits Totem 04 (2016).

The Spirits of Maritime Crossing 2026 presents the work of Sornchai Phongsa, a Bangkok-based artist whose paintings draw upon Mon cultural heritage, ancestral worship, and spiritual traditions.

Through richly layered compositions, Phongsa explores Mon beliefs surrounding ancestral spirits, ritual practices, and the transmission of lineage across generations. His work reflects on the relationship between personal identity and inherited cultural structures, examining how tradition continues to shape contemporary life.

Rooted in both lived experience and collective memory, his paintings also address questions of belonging, masculinity, and social expectations. As a gay man navigating the patriarchal frameworks embedded within Mon society, Phongsa’s practice offers a nuanced perspective on the tensions between individual identity and cultural inheritance.

At Spirits of Maritime Crossing 2026 – a Collateral Event of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, his work reflects on the shifting cultural currents that continue to redefine belonging in an interconnected world.
