5 summers ago I was up at the high school watching one of my older athletes coach a junior high game.

I asked Ella Greyard who THAT girl was.

“That’s Sophie Hortman, she’s ridiculous.. She’s definitely a Zingler girl” is what she said, inferring she was a very serious athlete who I needed to get in our gym.

Not but a short time later she had her first session at Zingler Strength.

And yep, in 5 minutes I knew she had it.

She continued to train her tail off for the next 5 years under our roof and proved everything I ever believed about her right.

And what amazes me the most about her is despite not knowing how, she works even harder when nobody is watching.

She used to cut her lunch class in high school to spend extra time on the wall.

I’d often go up to the high school to train myself, and there that girl was with a bucket of balls and a Bluetooth speaker just getting after it on her own.

She was a 3x State Player of the Year and named a 3x USA Lacrosse All-American.

But the All-American I pay attention to comes without a plaque.

The laundry list of accolades doesn’t tell you she’s also the girl who goes up to her young neighbors swim meets at the neighborhood pool to authentically cheer them on.

She told me in the beginning it was her goal to go “D1” and while I knew she was going to longggg before she did, what I’m most proud about is her going D1 in life.

These kids don’t come around often.

Thank you to the Hortman family for trusting me with one of the best.

She’s one of those kids you mentor who just flat out makes you better.

That kid is my dawg for life.

Love you, Soph.

Go Dukes, baby.
